Tangelo (lat. C. Reticulata x C. paradisi) - a fruit crop, which is a hybrid of pomelo or grapefruit with tangerine. This hybrid was bred back in 1867 by the efforts of the US Department of Agriculture.

Description

Tangelo are fruit trees ranging in height from five to seven meters, capable of boasting much better frost resistance than their grapefruit cousins.

The size of the globular tangelo fruit with characteristic bulges near the petioles almost never exceeds the size of a small grapefruit or orange. The orange peel of these fruits is very similar to the well-known orange peel, however, unlike the latter, it is always very easily separated from the pulp. As for the color of the pulp, it can be either orange or yellow. And the taste of the pulp is sweet and sour and very pleasant. By the way, there are not so many seeds in these fruits - about the same as in oranges.

At the moment, several varieties of this culture are known: Alemoen, Orlando, Mineola, Clementine, Agli, Thornton and Simenol.

Where grows

Tangelo is actively cultivated in Israel, Turkey, Florida and in a number of other countries with a subtropical climate.

Application

Tangelo fruits are very good fresh, while their calorie content is only 36 kcal for every 100 g of product. When purchasing this fruit, it is important to ensure that the skin of the fruit is uniform and bright enough, that is, without any plaque or stains. There should be absolutely no damage on the peel: no dents, no cracks, or easily squeezed areas. And the weight of each fruit must certainly be in full accordance with its size: too light fruits are direct evidence that the pulp has begun to dry out in them.

It is best to store tangelo in the refrigerator, at a temperature of two to seven degrees above zero. In this case, the fruit will retain its valuable properties for two weeks. At the same time, they will remain the same juicy and aromatic. If you leave the tangelo stored at room temperature, then after three days you will notice that the fruits have begun to deteriorate.

Tangelo is widely used for preparing various dishes - especially often, these fruits are found in recipes for South American and Mediterranean cuisines. Jams, jams and tangelo preserves will please even the most fastidious gourmets. Often, the pulp of these fruits can be found in all kinds of fruit and berry salads. And, by the way, it goes well with fish dishes and seafood. And from the peel they make wonderful candied fruits, which, being dried, are often added to tea.

Vitamin PP contained in tangelo is the key to healthy and strong capillaries and blood vessels, and folic acid in its composition has an extremely beneficial effect on the condition of expectant mothers and babies. Tangelo also boasts a pronounced diuretic and choleretic effect and the ability to increase appetite. It will also be an excellent helper for poor digestion and constipation. These fruits are especially recommended for people leading a sedentary lifestyle and the elderly. Tangelo also contains phosphorus, which is vital for maintaining healthy teeth and bones. And potassium makes these citrus fruits excellent helpers for hypertensive patients.

It is recommended to drink tangelo juice for depression, vitamin deficiencies, for the prevention of various colds and for pregnant women with toxicosis.

And the oil obtained from the skin of the tangelo has found its application in cosmetology - with its addition, wonderful soaps, scrubs, creams, shampoos, shower gels, etc. are made.

Contraindications

Tangelo should not be used for chronic ailments of the gastrointestinal tract and gastritis accompanied by high acidity. And for diabetics, these fruits are generally categorically contraindicated. Do not forget that, just like all citrus fruits, tangelo can provoke allergies.
