Bellflower saxifraga (lat. Campanula saxifraga) - a perennial rhizome plant of the genus Bell (lat. Campanula), belonging to the family of the same name Bellflower (lat. Campanulaceae). A thin, branched rhizome is able to find food for the plant on stony mountain slopes, at the same time strengthening the talus from slipping. The compact dwarf plant presents to the world surprisingly large and bright bells adorning a continuous carpet of slightly pubescent green leaves of the plant. Bellflower saxifrage is a very hardy and showy plant.
What's in your name
The Latin specific epithet "saxifraga" is translated into Russian as "saxifraga", reflecting the plant's ability to live on rocky surfaces, placing its rhizome and nimble roots in crevices, creating the impression that stems, leaves and flowers appear in this world, making their way road in a stone firmament.
Description
The bellflower saxifrage is a perennial herb with a blackish rhizome up to 0.5 centimeters thick. The rhizome branches strongly to keep the plant on crumbling rocky slopes, clinging to the roots for every crevice that turns up.
From the rhizome to the surface of the earth's firmament, erect or ascending peduncle stems and shoots with rosettes of naked or pubescent petiole leaves of a linear-lanceolate or linear shape are born. The edge of the leaf plate can be solid, or slightly crenate, with curly pubescence. The leaves located in the lower part of the stem are smaller than the basal ones, with short petioles, narrow-bell-shaped, and those located in the upper part of the stem are sessile, linear. The bushes of the plant are low, from 5 to 10 centimeters high.
It is even surprising how such dwarf plants show the world large bell-shaped flowers of a bright purple-blue, blue or lilac color, slightly inclined from the weight of the calyx and corolla of the flower. The length of the flowers is from 2 to 5 centimeters. The calyx of the flower is formed by accrete sepals, the corolla consists of five petals.
The fruit of the Bellflower is a brown-green dry capsule with small seeds.
The environment
The bellflower saxifrage is a rare plant protected by humans from complete extinction. In the wild, it grows on the rocky slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, preferring places open to sunlight, but the soil does not have time to dry out completely, providing the plant with moisture. Sometimes the plant can be found on mountain lawns.
Usage
The picturesque, slightly pubescent leaves and large bell-shaped bright flowers of a compact dwarf plant are perfect for such types of flower gardens as rocky gardens and alpine slides. The plant will be comfortable in a flower pot or any other flower container with good drainage of the potting mix.
The thin rhizome spreading horizontally will quickly fill the space allocated to the plant in the flower garden with a solid carpet of slightly hairy, scalloped leaves, which may be evergreen.
In the spring, the green carpet will be decorated with dark violet-blue bell-shaped flowers, the size of which will exceed expectations from a plant with such a modest and compact size. It is only necessary not to allow the soil to dry out completely, but also not to create stagnant water.
The saxifrage bell is a lover of the sun, and therefore the place of its landing should be open to the sun's rays. In frosty winters, it will be more reliable to cover the plant with improvised covering materials.
