The copulation method is suitable even for novice gardeners. The survival rate of cuttings in lilacs is high. With an accurate, quick operation, almost all plants grow. For a good fusion of the scion with the stock, it is necessary to thoroughly study all the subtleties of this work
Vaccination principle
The vaccination technology consists of several sequential operations:
1. With a sharp knife, make an oblique cut at an angle of 30 degrees carefully, quickly, in one motion. The surfaces are the same size for the scion and rootstock, smooth, even. In mass production, gardeners use a special device with guides for these purposes. It allows you to maintain the required angle on the cuts.
2. Combine two parts in one movement so that the cambial layers coincide perfectly. Do not touch the wound surfaces with your hands, rub them against each other, displacing the sections several times (the percentage of survival is reduced).
3. Tie the grafting site with a strip of plastic film 2 cm wide and 20 cm long, holding the twigs with two fingers of one hand. The end is guided over the last turn, pulling the tape tightly. The construction tape is turned over with the sticky side outward so as not to damage the thin skin of the plant when removed. The harness covers the cutting area plus 2 cm on each side additionally.
4. The finished bush is planted on the garden bed according to the scheme 20 by 25 cm. Well spilling the earth. The first time is covered from direct sunlight, return frost with non-woven material.
5. In the early spring of next year, the harness is carefully removed. The growth of lilac sections is slower than that of other crops. Therefore, you should not rush into this operation if the film does not interfere with the growth of the stem.
Young seedlings are transplanted to a permanent place for the next season: in early spring before bud break or in the second half of summer, when extreme heat and drought subsides. The root collar is placed at ground level.
Creation of standard bushes
To create standard options, cuttings are grafted at a high altitude. Choose a stock with a height of 1-1, 5 m. In the upper part, make an oblique cut between a pair of opposite buds. The kidney remaining on the base is located on the opposite side of the bevel in the middle. The stalk is processed in a similar way.
Open areas are connected, wrapped with foil. 2 sticks 10-15 cm long are tied under the graft. Protect the top from recurrent spring frosts by putting a plastic bag on the protruding twigs. They tie it 6 cm below the cut point. A solid base is needed to prevent the cutting from shifting from the beating of the wind.
When warm weather sets in, the protection is removed. In the future, the branches that form on the rootstock are removed, leaving varietal shoots.
Practical advice
When planting lilacs, you need to consider important points:
• the original variant is selected with a low shoot-forming ability;
• the strongest shoot is suitable for the base;
• in the future, wild shoots, formed from root buds, are removed, new branches below the grafting, so as not to weaken the cultivated shoots;
• lilac blooms quickly, in the first 2 years flower buds are removed, allowing young growth to form a strong crown;
• if you have not guessed with the thickness, then the thin scion is combined with at least one edge of the rootstock cut (in this case, accretion is difficult);
It is better to inoculate in the crown of varietal lilacs. The growing shoots are left in place. It does not spoil the composition with a “wild look”. If desired, new bushes are used as rootstocks.
Vaccination is an interesting activity! Any gardener can try himself as an artist. To save space in the crown of the original bush, several hybrids can be grafted onto different branches. The result is a fashionable head of hair with multi-colored "curls": one "strand" is blue, the second is pink, the third is white. There are many options for your taste!
