How to work with a floristic oasis

An oasis is a hygroscopic material created from artificial porous materials that is highly absorbent and has good moisture retention. Used for live plants as well as for arranging artificial buds and dried flowers. Oasis is irreplaceable in the work of professional florists

What are oases

The moisture-absorbing material, called a floristic oasis, is of different types: piaflor, floristic foam, sponge, foam, oasis soil. All these options are well nourished, retain water. Today, this popular product comes in a variety of flavors and uses. For example, sponges come in the form of curly hemispheres, balls, cubes, bars, cylinders. Oases are made in the form of a bouquet with a handle, a plastic frame with filler, in the form of a wreath, a heart with a loop for attaching to the wall.

The foam has the configuration of an oval, cube, brick and is intended for standard containers. Changing the shape of the foam is often difficult, as it is difficult to cut out the exact size or fit the chosen shape of the vessel.

How to use and where to buy a floristic oasis

The main purpose of the oasis is to fix the shape of the composition, create the desired arrangement of stems and accessories, as well as prolong the life of plants. It does not present any difficulties in work: it does not crumble, it is flexible, lightweight, plastic. For fresh flowers, the tinted range corresponds to dark greenery, the oasis has different shapes, it is not noticeable in the finished work.

Despite the ease of use, it is important to know about the rules of application: for impregnation, do not water with water, press to accelerate the absorption of moisture. Such actions end with surface saturation, inside the oasis, as a rule, remains dry. Correct use involves placing water on a mirror and that's it. The sponge itself will be nourished and, as it is saturated, will sink to the bottom - this is a sign of the readiness of the oasis. Now, from this blank, you need to cut the desired size or shape, which will fit tightly into the selected container. To do this, you need to have a sharp knife or scalpel, floral scissors. Another important point is not to use it a second time.

Technical material in various designs is available in flower shops, at points of sale of floral accessories, in online stores.

Working with an oasis for fresh flowers

Placing flowers requires preliminary preparation: think over the location, direction of plants, correlate with the place of destination, in a low composition, the material needs to be decorated. The layout should take place the first time and without permutations and secondary movements. Flowers that can fall out should be introduced at an angle to create additional resistance or under cover of adjacent stems.

It is important to know how to properly prepare the plant material: all lateral processes and thorns are removed. The cut is made at an acute angle and 2-3 cm long; the intensity of the intake of nutrients and moisture from the oasis depends on its cross-sectional area. An incorrect cut (at right angles), when immersed in matter, compresses the structure and destroys the surface capillary system, respectively, the possibility of moisture intake decreases.

Roses, lilies, calla lilies, tulips, orchids and other moisture-loving flowers are buried in the oasis as deep as possible, at least 2.5 cm. Leaves are generally not recommended to be inserted, as they begin to quickly rot and mold. As a rule, the leaf mass is removed from the peduncle before work.

Flowers dry up the oasis, so the finished composition requires watering. In order not to disrupt the arrangement of the stems, a watering can with a long narrow spout is needed, respectively, the stream will be weak, without pressure, this is important so as not to blur or weaken the fastening. When watering, it is unacceptable to get water on the inflorescences, this can provoke stagnation of moisture and premature decay.

Oasis for dry materials

A floristic oasis, designed for working with dry material, has a uniformly dense structure and shades of gray, holds stems well at any slope, easily fixes thick stems, branches and decorative elements. It is produced in the form of large bricks (23x11x8), which allows you to design spectacular volumetric compositions and allows you to implement any creative solutions.

The trend towards oasis-based modeling is fueled by the active production of a wide variety of piaflora species. Forms are produced that have a plastic base, which makes it possible to do without flowerpots, pots and other traditional devices. With the help of an oasis, compositions can be placed on walls, tables, in niches.
