Although this species owes its birth to mainland China, it has successfully taken root in Japan, demonstrating enviable resistance to the cold weather of the winter period, being a plant in warm tropical places. Japanese banana is a perennial herb with a powerful underground rhizome and pseudostem. Its roots, pseudostem, leaves and flowers are actively used by Chinese traditional medicine to combat human ailments.

The specific epithet "basjoo" (Japanese) somewhat distorts the place of birth of this species, since Banana came to Japan from the southern regions of China. But he took root so well in the Land of the Rising Sun that even a relatively cold winter does not interfere with his successful growth.

Description

The basis of the Japanese banana perennial is a powerful underground rhizome, capable of feeding a giant grass with its nutrient reserves.

From the underground rhizome to the surface of the earth, there are succulent petioles of large leaves, which, merging, form a strong pseudostem, resembling a tree trunk. Plant height reaches two to two and a half meters.

Medium green banana leaves grow up to two meters long with a leaf width of up to seventy centimeters, forming a lush crown of the plant. The leaf stalks are covered with a protective wax coating. Rare black spots are observed on a green background of juicy petioles.

The peduncle, which appears in the world from the pseudostem in September, bears a meter-long inflorescence formed by male, hermaphrodite and female flowers, located at different levels of one inflorescence.

Female flowers pollinated by bees are reborn into yellow-green fruits, the length of which varies from five to ten centimeters and a width of two to three centimeters. The white pulp of the fruit contains numerous black seeds that turn bananas into fruits that are inedible for humans.

Usage

Due to its cold resistance, Japanese banana has gained popularity as an ornamental plant among lovers of tropical foliage, since in areas with a temperate climate, fruit usually does not reach the fruit, especially since they are not edible. That is, the plant is planted in gardens to decorate the area with its large tropical leaves.

In addition to Japan, where Japanese Banana has taken root for a long time, at the end of the 19th century, it managed to move to Western Europe, Canada, the United States of America and the Black Sea coast of our country.

Although the pseudostem can only cope with a few degrees below zero, the plant does not lose its vitality even at lower temperatures, since its powerful underground rhizome, sheltered from frost with a good layer of mulch, does not die even at minus twelve degrees Celsius.

That is, if the aboveground part of the Banana dies from frost, then with the arrival of heat from the rhizome, new shoots will appear in the world, capable of growing new leaves during the warm season.

In Japan, fibers are made from pseudostems, from which the so-called "banana fabric" is produced. Fibers are used to make handmade carpets, tablecloths, traditional Japanese clothing - kimonos, as well as for paper production.
