Sisyurinhiy (lat. Sisyrinchium) - a rare flowering plant from the Iris family. Its second name is blue-eyed or blue-eyed.
Description
Sisyurinhiy is a low-growing herbaceous perennial that has a striking resemblance to miniature irises. The height of this plant is usually in the range from ten to fifty centimeters, its stems are most often straight, however, sometimes slightly flattened stems are also found, and its leaves are always thin and narrow, gathering in bizarre basal rosettes.
Sisyurinhia flowers can be not only blue, but also white, and yellow, and even purple. And the center of these flowers is usually of a different color. And this handsome man blooms throughout the summer - its flowering usually starts in May, and it ends with the onset of September.
In total, the genus Sisyurinhia has about a hundred species, but only ten of them can be found in culture. By the way, in Russia, sisyurinhiy was introduced into culture a very long time ago - at the end of the eighteenth century. And one of the first in the country this plant began to grow a big lover of flowers Count Razumovsky!
Where grows
In nature, sisyurinhiy grows in South and North America, in Greenland, as well as on the Sandwich and Falkland Islands.
Usage
Sisyurinhiy has proven itself in decorative floriculture - it looks very cool in front gardens, and on flower beds, and in group plantings, and in rockeries with rock gardens, and in borders, and it is also a magnificent decoration of alleys and paths. This plant goes especially well with bells, roses, sage and peonies. Sisyurinhiy will look very good in the company of other "blue eyes" - muscari, viola, brunner, blue hyacinths, veronica or forget-me-nots.
Growing and caring
Sisyurinhiy is able to grow on almost any soil, and both sunny areas and slight shading are equally well suited for its full development. But he really does not like drafts, and this fact in no case should be discounted.
The sisyurinhiy prefers a moderate moisture regime - its short roots do not penetrate the soil too deeply, therefore, in the absence of timely and regular watering, it may die. By the way, in order to retain moisture, it is very useful to mulch the soil near the roots!
Sisyurinhiy boasts a very impressive winter hardiness (nevertheless, he still needs winter shelter), as well as resistance to various diseases and pests. And in general, it is very unpretentious to care for, which makes it an incredibly attractive plant even for novice gardeners!
Sisyurinchia is propagated mainly by dividing the bushes: young plants usually take root perfectly and grow well. It is quite permissible to propagate it by seeds - they can be sown directly into the ground (this is done with the onset of May), but it is best to start growing seedlings at the very beginning of February. In this case, the seeds are scattered over the surface of the moistened soil and sprinkled with a thin soil layer (no more than three to four millimeters), after which they are covered with glass or plastic wrap and the container is sent to a warm place until the emergence of shoots. As soon as the seedlings grow up to five to six centimeters, they are either transplanted into boxes, or, if the weather is warm enough, immediately planted in an open sunny area with a distance of thirty to forty centimeters. And sisyurinhiy narrow-leaved, among other things, reproduces very well by self-seeding. By the way, in order to avoid the excessive appearance of young seedlings, it is recommended to cut off the flowering peduncles promptly!
