One of the first vitamin ingredients in our spring menu is salad. Someone prefers cabbage, someone more to taste romaine, others cannot imagine their life without spinach. And so that the greens are not transferred on our dining tables, in April we need to take care of timely planting and care

Spinach is harvested before flowering

Spinach is one of the first in a long list of spring greens that makes its way to our kitchens. In April, it is already possible to start harvesting the winter crops of last year. It will be ready for use when 5-7 leaves are formed on the outlets, and until a flower arrow appears, and the greens have not become coarse and acquired a bitter taste. Experienced gardeners do this in the morning and evening. If harvested during the daytime, it will wither quickly.

Another record holder for early harvest in April is lettuce. But those who took care of the crops in March will enjoy its juicy leaves from their beds.

Head lettuce moves to the beds

Head lettuce prefers loamy soils. It is also advisable to choose a place that is well warmed up by the sun. For planting, it would be necessary to fill the site with manure from the fall. When this procedure failed, future beds need to be filled with mineral compounds. In the spring, the following are suitable:

• lime-ammonium nitrate;

• superphosphate;

• potassium salt.

Each fertilizer is taken at 0.2 kg based on the calculation of 10 square meters. the area of the garden. But nitrogen is not used immediately in full. Half the dose is applied before planting, and the remainder is later used as a salad dressing.

If in early April, lettuce seedlings are recommended to be placed under a film shelter, then closer to the third decade of the month they are already relocating from the greenhouse to the open ground. For those who did not have time to sow lettuce earlier, during these periods, it is possible to propagate lettuce by seeds in a nursery. The crops are not thickened, since the seedlings will be grown without picking.

So that the salad is not translated, repeated crops are carried out. But they are performed already in open ground. For head varieties of the oil variety, the row spacing in the beds is left about a quarter of a meter, fragile varieties are grown with row spacing of 30 cm. The sowing density is calculated so that for 1 square meter. area used about 2 g of seeds. However, after the emergence of seedlings on the beds, the crops must be thinned out - so that the distance between the seedlings is approximately equal to the row spacing.

Romaine lettuce needs hardening

Seedlings of romaine lettuce are planted in unprotected soil a little later in comparison with the head ones. Therefore, there is still time to harden the plants before moving them to the beds. For this, the frames of the greenhouses are slightly opened for a longer time than for airing. Seedlings should be ready for shipping at the end of the month.

In addition, you can sow romaine directly into the open ground. Sowing rates and placement in the beds are the same as when working with head lettuce.

Parsley, celery and chard

In addition to salad crops, spring green delicacies include parsley, celery, and chard. Too dense plantings of leaf parsley should be thinned out so that there is a distance of about 10 cm between shoots. Early celery, which was sown in March, dives according to the 5x5 cm scheme. This work is taken when the plants have at least a couple of leaves. They are accommodated in greenhouses and grown at temperatures ranging from + 10 … + 12 degrees C.

Mangold is used both as a stubble crop and for the use of early spring greens. This unusual culture is demanding on soil fertility, but only mineral fertilizers or only manure can be used for it. If organic matter is not available, take:

• lime-ammonium nitrate - 0.6 kg;

• superphosphate - 0.2 kg;

• potassium salt - 0.3 kg.

The crops are made thicker, but then it will also be necessary to thin out the seedlings.
