Tall shrub or ampelous flower?

Jasmine is a fairly large plant. It is a creeping shrub with thin stems clinging to any support. It is possible to grow it without support, but then the pots with jasmine must be placed higher so that its branches hang freely down like an ampel flower.

The shape of the leaves is closer to elliptical with pointed ends, their petioles are barely noticeable. The flowers are tubular, the deeply dissected corolla has five wide-open petals, in the center there are two short stamens. Indoor flowers can be of different colors: white, pink, yellow, with both smooth and double petals. The flowering period is about 5 months - from May to August.

The most common and extremely popular varieties in indoor floriculture are:

• holo-flowered jasmine;

• Arabian jasmine.

A striking feature of the Arabian variety is the discoloration of the petals as the flowering time draws to a close. Then the fragrant white stars take on a reddish color. Another decorative feature of this species is the shiny leaf plate.

Conditions of detention in warm and cold periods

In summer, jasmine can be moved to an open balcony, loggia or garden. Also, the pots are placed on the veranda or in another sunniest room in your home by the window. The more light there is in the room, the better the shrub blooms, and the larger the buds form on it. However, from direct sunlight falling on the shoots through the glass of the window, it is better to shade the plant with a tulle curtain, translucent curtains.

In winter, experts do not recommend keeping the pots in too warm rooms with dry heating with radiators. The optimum air temperature in a room where jasmine grows in winter will be about + 18 … + 20 ° С. The frequency and volume of watering in winter should be reduced compared to the summer months.

During the dormant period, the plant must carry out sanitary pruning. This procedure is carried out with jasmine in February. Examine the shrub for the appearance of too weak, thin and dry shoots, underdeveloped branches. They need to be removed so they don't drain the flower. In addition, healthy long shoots should be shortened by about a third. After that, the bush will become more lush, and it will grow better. In addition to annual pruning, it is advisable to transplant into a fresh nutrient substrate every year.

Jasmine propagation

Jasmine begins to breed in March. In room conditions, this is done in a vegetative way. A cutting or cuttings from the mother plant are used as planting material. Cuttings are cut from the tops of lignified shoots. The length is made so that each retains three internodes. They are rooted under a glass shelter.

After the planting material acquires its own roots, it is planted in pots with such a nutritious substrate:

• sod land - 3 parts;

• deciduous land - 2 parts;

• peat land - 1 part;

• sand - 1 part.

At the beginning of growth, young jasmine will be comfortable in a more humid environment. It must be regularly sprayed, watered abundantly. Nitrogen and potassium supplements also contribute to rapid growth. At the same time, it is useful to know that too active growth and waterlogged soil postpone the appearance of buds.
