If the rose is called the queen of the garden, then the title of king may well be assigned to a peony. This perennial is very popular in home gardening due to its large double flowers and delicious aroma. But how often it happens that a peony blooms magnificently in a neighbor's garden, and our plants, after years, do not please with their appearance. How to care for a flower bed so that planting only cheers us up?

What does a peony need for longevity

The key to excellent flowering and longevity of peony bushes is such factors as:

• correct watering;

• regular feeding;

• timely transplants.

Technology and time of watering peonies

Attention to watering needs to be increased when peonies enter an active growth period. This time falls on May-early June, as well as from July to the first ten days of August. In this case, the soil must be soaked to a great depth so that the moisture reaches deep roots. To achieve this, one bush will require at least 3 buckets of water.

After water procedures, the ground under the peonies is loosened. The depth of loosening should be about 5 cm, but at the same time it is necessary to retreat from the stem by about 10-12 cm so as not to touch the kidney with the tool.

Lack of nutrition and excess fertilization

Peonies are very sensitive to lack of nutrients in the soil. This is especially noticeable on old plantings. Bushes, which used to be distinguished by lush flowering, become smaller in buds, and the stems become thinner. You can correct the situation with the help of dressings. But you should not expect an instant result. The plant will regain its strength only after a year.

In caring for a peony, top dressing should be applied three times in one season. On well-filled fertile soil, after planting, the plants begin to do this only from the third year. The first feeding is performed in early spring, even in the snow. The next one is performed during the budding period of plants. In both cases, you can use nitrophosphate at the rate of 100 g per 1 square meter. For the third time, fertilizers are applied after the end of the flowering period. To do this, use the following drugs:

• superphosphate - 25-30 g per 1 square meter;

• potassium sulfate - 10-15 g per 1 sq. M.

On old plantings of peonies, which are more than 4 years old, this rate is multiplied by one and a half times. For young and older peony bushes, the method of feeding is also different. So, up to 4 years old, it is better to process peonies with dressings on the leaves. Older specimens are root-fed. To do this, a groove is dug around the plants, fertilizers are placed there, watering is carried out and, in the process of loosening, they are embedded in the soil.

Perennials can be damaged by both lack of nutrition and excess fertilizer. In particular, this applies to nitrogen compositions. For example, if you overdo it with manure, the flowers are more likely to start growing, but in the future this may negatively affect the root system. Peonies will hurt and stop blooming.

Change of registration

Peonies are not recommended to be grown in one place for more than 7 years. Not only do they drain the soil. In addition, old rhizomes can rot, provoking the spread of diseases to healthy tissues. And the transplant will heal and rejuvenate the old bush.

The new residence for peonies should be sunny, protected from wind and drafts. You should not break a flower bed near walls and fences, here the soil will sooner lose moisture, and in winter the plants will freeze more. In addition, it is advisable that the peonies do not get water that flows from roofs and low tides. The place for replanting should also be chosen away from trees and shrubs. Another reason why peonies may have problems with the formation of buds is thickened plantings.
