Kirengeshoma is a close relative of hydrangea; outwardly it looks more like indoor abutilon with maple leaves. In the middle lane, a rare specimen in amateur gardens. The greatest effect is achieved during flowering, when the plant is covered with yellow waxy bells. As if miniature street lamps heal on a flower bed. Let's take a closer look at an exotic guest
Growing conditions
The homeland of the kirengeshoma is Japan, the northeastern part of China. Prefers wet valleys, river floodplains, lakes grows well under the canopy of bushes. Loves semi-shady places, fertile loose, slightly acidic loams.
In Central Russia it winters well without shelter
Biological features
The name of the plant is made up of 3 words. It translates as "a yellow lotus flower that looks like a hat", due to the structure of the opened buds. Waxy yellow oval petals are superimposed on each other in a spiral. Bells bloom from August until frost at the ends of long, meter-long shoots.
Strong roots lie in the surface layer of the soil. Stems are tetrahedral lignified in the lower part. The opposite light green leaves on long stalks resemble a maple shape, they seem to be papery to the touch.
Interestingly shaped three-horned capsules contain yellowish flat seeds.
Growing
Plants are placed adhering to natural growing conditions. During planting, a humus-sand mixture is introduced. The root zone is mulched with peat or sawdust to create a favorable microclimate (protection against overheating, moisture retention, weed control).
Complex fertilizers are used on young bushes in the spring-summer period: with regrowth of the vegetative mass, during flowering. Adult specimens do not need feeding.
During dry periods, keep the soil moist by regularly watering the plants. In the first half of the season, weeds are removed, later the bushes suppress them themselves, creating a dense cover. Trimming of the ground part is carried out in the spring.
Reproduction
Propagated by a Japanese guest in three ways:
• division of adult plants;
• basal cuttings;
• seeds.
Plant transplantation is easy. In early spring, they dig up the bushes completely, free them neatly from the ground. Cut into separate parts, leaving 2-3 shoots in each. They are seated at a distance of 50 cm from each other.
Experienced gardeners use the root cuttings method. When the shoots grow back, pieces of the stem with a small part of the rhizome are separated from the adult specimens. The bushes themselves are not dug up.
They are planted under a film in a sandy-humus mixture. Moderately moisturize the soil. In a month, the "young", with a well-developed root system, is ready to move to a permanent place.
The seed method is rarely used. In the Middle Lane, the sowing material does not have time to mature to the end, has a low germination capacity, a long germination period (from a month to 1 year).
Purchased seeds require long-term stratification. Sown in bowls, they are kept at low positive temperatures for 3-4 months, buried in the snow or on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. Seedlings develop slowly, reaching the flowering period in 3-4 years.
Place in the garden
Kirengeshoma is decorative throughout the season. At the beginning, spreading shoots with large maple-shaped leaves completely cover the empty spaces around the plant, in August, yellow lanterns of inflorescences are lit.
It goes well with black cohosh, rogers, hosts, ferns, buzulniks. Suitable for Japanese-style rocky gardens. Feels great in the coastal strip of artificial reservoirs.
Plant an unusual kirengeshoma plant in your garden to admire the cascades of tender yellow bells at the end of summer.
