By tradition, Maslenitsa is a holiday of hearty and delicious food. Since olden times, celebrating the farewell to winter, urban and rural residents for a whole week, and sometimes even longer, did nothing but bake, boil, roast, serve and treat neighbors and friends! On the site of the Moscow Maslenitsa festival on Manezhnaya Square, guests can take a gastronomic journey through time and learn what and how Muscovites prepared and treated each other in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. And 25 historical programs and creative activities for every taste will help them in this
From March 1 to March 10, a real Maslenitsa town will unfold on Manezhnaya, noisy and very bright - they will meet guests here every day
up to 105 reenactors from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Voronezh and Nizhny Novgorod. On this site, stylized shopping arcades, a courtyard with a poultry yard and other buildings will appear.
In the local "Butcher Shop" guests will be offered to take part in workshops on cutting meat and fish, to study ancient methods of preservation and to learn recipes that were very popular in the old days, but today almost forgotten dishes, such as, for example, lamb ear soup, capercaillie roast, yurma (a type of broth) with black grouse or pickled goose roll.
Culinary demonstrations will also take place in the "Traktir": guests of the festival will discover the secrets of the main hits of pre-revolutionary catering - soup with pies, botvinia with white fish, kulebyaki and fruit Guryev porridge.
In the "Tea Room" they will tell you how tea was brewed in the 19th century and how tea drinking traditions differed among representatives of different classes.
Of course, Shrovetide will not do without pancakes! In the "Moscow bourgeois house" everyone will be taught how to cook pancakes from roots and French crepes, and they will also talk about the cooking techniques that were fashionable at that time: for example, about flambing. And nearby, in the "Peasant House", they will demonstrate the most different types of traditional Pancake baking - gingerbread "goat", spring biscuits "teetki", rye "sun". And here you can try your hand at master classes in weaving and folk crafts. Well, and at the "Compound" - learn how to chop wood and churn butter.
After gastronomic activities, adults and young guests of the festival will be invited to take part in traditional Maslenitsa fun - such as fights on sacks, play the favorite games of the townspeople of the 19th century (kubar and grandmother), and simply observe the "everyday life" of the colorful inhabitants of this site - organ grinders, hustler, stilt walkers and other curious characters. There are also musical surprises awaiting guests - for example, members of the Argemonia folk group from St. Petersburg are preparing to appear on Manezhnaya in the guise of “street musicians” and are exploring Moscow city folklore and motifs and melodies popular at the beginning of the 20th century! And, of course, here you can take the brightest and most unusual photos for memory.
