In any home there are secluded corners or places that the owners often forget about during routine cleaning and do not pay enough attention to them. However, these areas often become a potential environment for the development of mold, staphylococci, fungi and harmful bacteria. Experts advise not to lose sight of such areas, and promptly clean and disinfect them.
1. Dishwashing sponge
In a household sponge, up to 15% of cases can develop Escherichia coli and Salmonella. This kitchen attribute stays moist for a long time along with food waste residues, which becomes an excellent breeding ground for bacteria. In one Western study, up to 86% of the sponges contained 77% of mold and other fungi, E. coli bacteria, and 18% were filled with staphylococcus bacteria. All of these microorganisms can cause serious harm to a person, from mild indigestion to seizures and pneumonia.
There is a simple way to protect sponges from bacteria invasion:
- after use, always rinse thoroughly with water and soap and then wring dry, - once a week, treat the sponge with a microwave for 30 seconds (microwaves kill germs well).
- change the sponge to a new one weekly.
The stand / utensil in which the sponge is stored is no less dangerous - it should also be kept clean and replaced as needed.
2. Kitchen sink
Experts say the kitchen has more germs than the bathroom, and the kitchen sink is the second most polluted place in the home. This is not hard to believe if you remember that most food (including raw root vegetables) and kitchen utensils are cleaned of dirt in the sink. Studies have shown that about 45% of shells contained E. coli bacteria, and 27% contained mold.
It is recommended to disinfect the sink (including its sides) at least once / twice a week. It is useful to disinfect drainage and pipes once a month. When using a whiteness solution, you need to be careful and then rinse everything thoroughly with water.
3. Toothbrush holder
Surprisingly, a toothbrush container can be dirtier than a toilet lid. The latter attribute is cleaned regularly, but the brush holder is not. The situation is especially dangerous in shared bathrooms when the sink is not far from the toilet. In shared bathrooms, it is important to close the toilet lid after using it and place the toothbrush holder as far away from the toilet seat as possible. It is advisable to disinfect the brush container weekly, and replace it with a new one every three months.
4. Bathroom faucets
If the bathroom does not have a touchless faucet, then the faucet handles automatically become one of the dirtiest places in the house. After all, they are often touched with not yet washed hands. Studies have shown that 27% of faucet handles contain staphylococcus aureus and 9% contain colibacillus bacteria. 5. Countertop in the kitchen

Packages and bags from stores are often placed on it (which could initially lie on the floor in the passenger compartment or in the stairwell in front of the front door), as well as various raw vegetables and products (often not yet washed), dirty dishes, rags, and other items, which can become breeding grounds for bacteria.
So it's no surprise that roughly 32% of countertops contain coliform bacteria and 18% mold. It is not recommended to put shopping bags and dirty food on the countertop. And it is advisable to regularly wipe and disinfect the surface of kitchen furniture itself. Since countertops are made from different materials, it is important to follow the rules of its operation so as not to damage it and shorten its service life.
6. Pet accessories
Most of them (collars, muzzles, dishes, toys, etc.) also contain a lot of microbes. Mold and mildew were found on approximately 45% of the pet dishes and 18% were found to contain E. coli bacteria. 55% of tetrapod toys contained fungi and mold, and 23% - staphylococcus bacteria.
It is advisable to thoroughly clean and disinfect pet accessories daily or at least once every few days. For example, once a week they can be soaked in a solution with whiteness for 10 minutes once a week, but then rinsed thoroughly with water.
7. Ventilation holes
How often is the ventilation grille cleaned? Sometimes only before the arrival of a check from the housing office or during repairs. But in this area, up to 27% of mold and fungi, 14% of E. coli bacteria are collected. This is why it is advisable to remove the grates every week and soak them in soapy water to rid it of dust and dirt.
