Radishes are an excellent source of vitamins. It is especially useful in the spring, when the body suffers from vitamin deficiency. Bright root vegetables help us improve appetite, normalize metabolism and strengthen the body's defenses. But sometimes we have to share radishes with various pests. Who, besides us, loves to feast on these juicy roots?
Cabbage white
This voracious pest is a rather large butterfly, endowed with white wings with clearly visible black edges. Yellowish-greenish caterpillars of harmful parasites are covered with hairs and black spots, and fancy yellowish stripes run along their sides. First, the pests, having gathered in the colony, feed on the undersides of the leaves, and after some time they move to the unaffected radish.
Cabbage scoop
Often, radish also suffers from invasions of the cabbage scoop - a grayish-brownish butterfly with a wingspan of 45 to 50 mm. The front wings of these villains are decorated with funny patterns of darker specks and stripes. The main harm to radishes is caused by caterpillars of cabbage scoops - caterpillars of younger ages are distinguished by a greenish color, older individuals are painted in grayish-greenish shades, and caterpillars that have reached the fifth and sixth instars are usually brownish.
Wireworm
Wireworms actively eat not only the upper young roots of radish seedlings, but also young root crops or stalks. These most dangerous pests are essentially the larvae of the click beetle. All of them are characterized by an elongated hard body, light brown or yellowish color and the presence of three pairs of short legs.
Cruciferous flea
Radish is damaged by this pest quite often - numerous holes made by cruciferous fleas can be regularly observed on growing crops. These voracious parasites are tiny, monochromatic insects with a distinctive metallic luster on their bodies. With particular pleasure, they attack newly planted seedlings, damaging the growth points on it, which in turn leads to the inevitable death of plants.
Spring cabbage fly
If ash-gray flies with three rather wide stripes on the dorsal side of the breasts appear on the site, these are spring cabbage flies. As a rule, their size does not exceed 6 mm. And the legless white pest larvae, slightly tapering towards the front ends, can grow up to 8 mm. They feed on both the inner and peripheral parts of the main root. Vegetation damaged by spring cabbage flies is characterized by stunted growth and is colored in bluish-lilac tones. It gradually fades and eventually dies.
Summer cabbage fly
These scoundrels are especially harmful on peat-bog soils. Outwardly, they are similar to spring cabbage flies, but differ from them in more solid size - their length reaches 7 - 8 mm. And the wings of summer cabbage flies have a barely noticeable yellowish tint.
Garden scoop
Radishes are mainly harmed by caterpillars of garden scoops, and the butterflies themselves are exclusively nocturnal. Younger caterpillars very actively devour the leaves of growing crops, skeletonizing them mainly from the lower sides. And adult caterpillars eat leaves whole. Moreover, they do not disdain the pulp of the fruit, gnawing out rather large holes of irregular shape in it.
Cabbage moth
The cabbage moth differs from other pests in its grayish-brownish color, and its wingspan can reach about 14 - 18 mm. In addition, the eye-catching wings of the pest are adorned with eye-catching dark fringes. Radishes are mostly harmed by cabbage moth caterpillars - butterflies do not pose the same danger for this culture.
