In the first part of the article, we figured out how to properly remove apples from trees and sort them, and also why these fruits cannot be stored together with vegetables. We also found out which varieties are considered the most suitable for storage, how long the cherished harvest can be kept and what temperature is required for this. Now is the time to talk about the options for storing apples and how to stack them, because it is these factors that completely depend on how long these juicy and healthy fruits can be preserved
Apple storage options
In wooden boxes. Apples should be laid in boxes as carefully as possible so that dents and wounds do not appear on them, because these delicate fruits can easily get hurt even on the stalks. And picking off the stalks, if you want to keep the apples longer, is not recommended. It is best to put them in boxes by hand. If in the future it is planned to stack the boxes on top of each other, then you should not overfill them with fruit, otherwise the upper boxes will begin to crush the fruits lying in the lower ones, and the juicy apples will quickly deteriorate.
In cardboard boxes. It is recommended to properly glue such a container with tape, otherwise at the most inopportune moment the cardboard containers may burst. And apples are put in them in the same way as in wooden boxes.
On the shelves. Shelves equipped with drawers will be especially suitable - in this case, it will be much easier to get apples for their subsequent consumption or inspect them for damage. It is necessary to put apples on the racks in one row, trying to place them in such a way that they do not come into contact with each other.
In wooden containers. The rich harvest is preserved well in wooden containers. However, this storage method also has a certain disadvantage - if there are too many apples, the fruits on top begin to press on the lower ones, contributing to their rapid spoilage.
In the ground. In the absence of a basement, you can easily keep apples in the ground. To do this, they dug a trench forty to fifty centimeters deep in advance, and as soon as the cold comes (up to minus five to seven degrees), apples of five to six kilograms are packed in polyethylene bags and placed in a dug hole. And in order to prevent mice from reaching the apples, twigs of juniper or spruce are laid on the bottom of the trench and on top of the bags, and only then the crop is covered with earth. From above, to protect from the cold, some summer residents still pour foliage. It is not superfluous to mark the place where apples are stored with some identification mark - then it will be much easier to find it. By the way, apples in this form are excellently preserved until spring.
In plastic bags. These healthy fruits are kept pretty well in polyethylene bags. Each bag is placed from two to four kilograms of apples of the same variety, after which the bags are tied and made into them for ventilation, four to five holes or cuts. And it is necessary to store the fruits in this form at a temperature from minus one to plus one degree.
Methods for storing apples
Interleaving or spilling. First, a layer of clean (thoroughly washed and dried) sand mixed with ash is placed on the bottom of the container. It will be quite enough to fill it with a layer of about three centimeters. Next, a layer of apples is laid on the sand so that they do not come into contact with each other, and completely fill it with another layer of the same mixture that was poured onto the bottom of the container. Then, two or three more layers of fruits are laid out on top in the same way. It is not forbidden to interlay apples and other bulk or dry materials. Onion husks, wood leaves, sawdust, buckwheat husks, moss, peat, husks, flax strips and shavings of deciduous trees are especially good for this.
Paper wrapping. With this method of stacking, each apple is wrapped in a paper napkin or paper, and then the stalks are stacked up in rows in boxes or boxes. If you select healthy fruits for storage in this way, they will last a very long time and well.
"Simple styling". Apples, without interlayering, are laid in two or three layers upside down. Too long stalks are slightly shortened so that they do not injure the skins of neighboring apples. In principle, more fruits can be stacked in this way, but in this case it will be inconvenient to observe their condition. It is important to take into account that this method is the most short-lived: if at least one focus of decay appears, it will quickly cover the rest of the fruit as well. So apples stored in this form must be sorted out systematically.
