In modern flower and garden shops, you can buy ready-made seeds for planting almost any crop. But their quality is not always good for the buyer. Therefore, many experienced gardeners prefer to independently obtain planting material and store it until the next season. In the plots, almost all plants form new seeds. However, for their correct preservation and collection, certain rules and tricks must be followed
General recommendations
It is best to have a specially equipped area in the country for planting those vegetable crops that bring seeds to the summer resident for the future. It should not be large, enough and very small space for such purposes. Here it is required to plant only one, two or three plant specimens. All of them will not be used for food, but for the collection of planting material. Although some crops allow you to get both seeds and fruits at the same time. Therefore, on ordinary beds it is worth marking representatives of such plants with some distinctive feature. Peas, cucumbers, zucchini and similar crops allow you to isolate the whip. Then you will need to work with her individually.
It is important to provide good conditions for the site in order to get high-quality and good seeds at the exit. Therefore, the area for growing plantings for seed should be well lit by the sun's rays. There should be no threat of drafts, strong winds and hurricanes.
The space should also be isolated from other plants. This circumstance is of particular importance for cross-pollinated crops. On the territory allotted for the task, it is necessary to grow only one variety of a particular vegetable crop. If you plan to grow several varieties at once, then they should be planted farther from each other. It is required to monitor the neat appearance and cleanliness of such a site.
Weeding is a mandatory rule of leaving in this case. Otherwise, weeds will drown out the plants, pollinate them. Weeds also contribute to the development of many diseases and attract pests. Instances for growing seeds must be completely healthy and robust. The issues of processing and care in such territories should be treated with trepidation and increased attention. Watering, fertilizing, and pest and disease control procedures must be completed in a timely manner, without delay.
How to harvest pumpkin, squash or cucumber seeds?
For collecting seeds of a cucumber crop, low-lying fruits in first-order lashes are suitable. Seed can only be harvested after the vegetable is fully ripe. The testes, which can already be considered ripe, have a thick bark and a brownish tint, presented in a pattern in a miniature mesh. At the same time, the stalk dries up and turns black by this time. The gardener needs to leave the fruits of the cucumbers on the bush, although some summer residents remove them and store them until softened.
In order to prepare the seeds, cut off a couple of centimeters from both sides of the fruit. As a result, only the central region with the highest quality and best seeds remains. The cucumber should be cut into two pieces. The seeds are extracted along with the pulp (called the pulp).
The core of the cucumber should be placed in a wide container for a period of three to four days. During this time, the mass should ferment. When fermenting, it is absolutely impossible to add water to the mixture. It is also worth maintaining the temperature conditions of the mass during fermentation at twenty-two to twenty-five degrees Celsius. After the foam rises to the top of the bowl or other container, the fermentation process can be considered complete. Thus, the seeds can already be very easily and effortlessly separated from the soft part of the fruit.
After fermentation is complete, the seeds must be rinsed from the pulp with plain cool water. Dry them with a paper towel, and then leave them on for a few minutes. At home, you can immediately start selecting heavy seeds. They are considered to be of the highest quality.
Here you can use such an interesting way - to arrange the planting material in a saline solution. Light seeds will immediately float to the surface. They are not suitable for planting, so they must be removed. Seeds that have settled to the bottom are washed with water and dried indoors until they are completely ready for storage.
As for pumpkin and zucchini, the process of preparing planting material for them is identical to the selection of cucumber seeds. The best seeds are those found in the heart of the fruit. Store seeds indoors. Warm air should always be present in it. The seed preparation procedure must be performed before January.
