Pelargonium is one of the first to announce the arrival of this spring and continues to delight with its flowering until the October cold weather. In March, a lush rosette of buds dissolves large-flowered pelargonium, in April the thyroid blooms and already in May opens the delicate petals of zonal pelargonium

Breeding methods for zonal and large-flowered pelargonium

Pelargonium at home propagates vegetatively - by cuttings. Apical shoots with 4-5 leaves are cut as planting material. This is done in March-April with a bush of zonal pelargonium, large-flowered geraniums thus begin to multiply in August. An oblique cut is made immediately under the kidney and immediately treated with crushed wood ash. In order for the bush to form lush, the apical bud must be pinched.

Some growers are engaged in the reproduction of zonal pelargonium in September. Shoots for cuttings are chosen without buds, with at least two nodes. The chopped planting material is not planted right away, but grated a little, and then all large leaves are removed. The place of the lower cut is treated first of all with the juice of the tree-like aloe, and then with crushed wood ash.

Prepared cuttings for rooting are planted in boxes with nutritious soil mixture, which includes:

• humus earth - 4 parts;

• sod land - 2 parts;

• sand - 1 part.

It is useful to add a little dry cow dung and bone meal to the substrate - this will provide the weakened shoots with the necessary nutrients and trace elements.

A good rooting composition is also:

• peat soil and compost - 2 parts each;

• deciduous soil, sand - 1 part each.

While the cuttings are rooting, they need moderate watering. Planting material is kept in a well-ventilated area.

After the appearance of four to five full-fledged leaves, the cuttings are transplanted into individual cups or small pots. For further development, they will need such soil:

• sod land - 8 parts;

• humus earth - 2 parts;

• sand - 1 part.

In addition, fertilizer for indoor plants is added. Watering the seedlings is carried out with warm water.

The pots are kept in a well-lit window - pelargonium loves light. In February, young plants need to pinch the tops. After that, young shoots appear faster and buds are tied.

Propagation by cuttings of thyroid pelargonium

Shoots of thyroid pelargonium are cut into cuttings with 1-2 leaves. Rooting of the planting material takes place in a vessel with coarse-grained sand. For the first 2 days, the cuttings are not watered, they cannot be sprayed at all. In the future, moderate watering is required. After 2-3 weeks, the cuttings acquire roots, and they can be planted in separate pots.

When to wait for the first buds to appear?

With a spring planting of the thyroid and zonal varieties, the first flowering is expected in July-August. The zonal pelargonium planted in September opens its first buds in April-May of the next year. Large-flowered pelargonium pleases with its flowering no earlier than two years after planting, and sometimes it blooms for the first time only in the third year.

Features of caring for pelargonium

In summer, Pelargonium needs abundant watering; in winter, the flowers are moderately moisturized. In the cold season, the air temperature comfortable for plants is + 7 … + 10 ° С.

Pelargonium is a rather delicate plant, and improper care can lead to rotting of individual parts and death of the flower. During watering, make sure that drops do not fall on leaves and stems. When the leaves begin to turn yellow and dry out, they are carefully cut off, leaving the lower part of the petal on the stem. If they are inadvertently torn off, the damaged tissue will quickly rot. Such sore spots must be cut off and treated with crushed charcoal.
