With the arrival of May, an extremely crucial period begins for those who grow cabbage in their garden. These days, it is necessary to have time to water and feed the head varieties in time, transfer the greenhouse seedlings to open ground, preventing them from stretching and overgrowing, and sowing the next batch into the nursery
Schedule watering for the evening
Cabbage is a famous lover of watering. And the greatest thirst for water is experienced by cabbage varieties from mid-May to the second decade of July. If in early spring measures were taken to retain moisture in the soil, then in the first spring months there is an excess of water in the ground for plants. But by May, especially with a high density of plants in the beds, the moisture in the soil may become insufficient. Therefore, the garden needs watering. It is especially important to pay attention to moisturizing those beds where cabbage grows: cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi.
Those who believe that watering time does not matter are mistaken. It is best to schedule this event during the evening hours. The fact is that overnight moisture will penetrate deeper into the soil. And if you water the beds during the day, then the water will evaporate faster from the surface and will not reach deep layers. It is wrong to compensate for this with more frequent watering. Because plants tolerate slight drought better than excess moisture. And in this regard, watering is carried out when the earth is dry enough. Therefore, preference should be given to abundant, but infrequent watering, so that the soil is moistened to a depth of about 15 cm. At the same time, the plants should be watered with a moderate stream so that the spray does not fall on the leaves of the plants. If this does not hurt the cabbage much, then the lettuce planted next to it, the tomatoes are painfully experiencing it.
Saltpeter, clay and mullein for cabbage
Watering cabbage can be combined with plant dressing. For this, saltpeter is diluted with water. Also, these fertilizers can be applied dry - scattering over the beds. In addition, in May, seedlings of tall varieties of Brussels sprouts are fertilized with ammonium nitrate, and when the heads begin to set, also cauliflower.
At the age of 7 weeks, Brussels sprouts are transplanted from the nursery into the open ground. Before planting, experienced gardeners recommend treating the roots of the seedlings with a mixture of clay and mullein. Until the second decade of May, it is not too late to sow seeds of Brussels sprouts of low-growing varieties in the nursery.
Remove the shelters, but protect the heads
Already in May, the first harvest of cauliflower and kohlrabi is harvested from greenhouses. Cauliflower under the film can be freed from the shelter. At the same time, make sure that the heads do not fall under direct sunlight, otherwise they will lose their presentation. To preserve delicate inflorescences, they are shaded with their own leaves: they tie two small ones above the heads or break one large one on top.
Have time to remove the re-crop
Asparagus cabbage, planted for seedlings in March-April, is transplanted to a permanent place in early May. Otherwise the broccoli will outgrow. And as space becomes free - you can use it for new crops. Asparagus continues to be sown in the nursery until early summer. With this sowing regime, it will have time to ripen before harvesting in the autumn months.
It's also time to think about getting another cauliflower crop in September-October. To do this, in the third decade of May, it is sown in greenhouses. If you grow seedlings in boxes, they will then have to be dived into pots. When there is no desire to pick again, cabbage should rarely be sown directly into the nursery.
Throughout May and throughout June, you can continue to sow collard greens on seedlings. However, it must be borne in mind that the later the sowing is carried out, the poorer the harvest will turn out.
