Large mannik, also called water manna, can most often be seen growing in damp flood meadows, as well as along the shores of grassy swamps and lakes in Western Asia and the temperate zone of Europe. It forms rather dense and very colorful thickets and can be both shallow and coastal plants. At the same time, not only large manna flowers have excellent decorative properties, but also its leaves

Getting to know the plant

Mannik large belongs to the Cereals family and is a rather large plant, reaching a height of eighty to two hundred centimeters. The rhizomes of this perennial are very thick, creeping and long. And the diameter of its flattened and thick straight stems is often 1 cm.

The bright green leaves of a large manna are keeled, long, linear, rough at the edges and rather tough. Their width ranges from 6 to 16 mm, and their length can reach 60 cm. Tongues 1-3 mm long are obtuse and rounded at the tops. The length of the spreading, dense and rather large panicles of a large manna is often about forty centimeters. And its awnless elongated spikelets 5 - 9 mm long are usually multi-flowered.

Bisexual flowers of large manna are painted in greenish tones. The peak of decorativeness of this plant is characteristic for the entire season of its development.

The most common cultivar is Variegata. Its distinctive feature is the presence of light yellow stripes on the leaves. And closer to autumn, this interesting plant is painted in reddish shades. The length of plants of this variety ranges from 50 - 60 to 150 cm.

Using a large manna

Young plants are quite good food for livestock, however, if a large manna is affected by a smut fungus, then in no case should you feed it to livestock, as it becomes poisonous.

Large manna straw is used for anchoring the banks and for roofs. And in a number of regions in lean years, people ate grains of this plant.

How to grow

To grow a large manna, a solar regime is required. But this plant is extremely undemanding to soil fertility: it can be low, medium or high.

A large manna is grown either in the open field or in containers. The most preferred planting depth will be approximately 20 cm. When grown in containers, this green pet has the ability to spread its rhizomes into nearby containers.

This plant propagates both by seeds and by dividing the bushes. By dividing bushes and segments of rhizomes, large manna reproduces mainly in autumn or spring.

In leaving, a large manna is very unpretentious. For the winter, it can be left in reservoirs, since it is characterized by a high degree of winter hardiness and cold resistance. From time to time, the spread of this tall handsome man should also be limited. This is due to the fact that it can suppress the development of other crops, especially if this plant grows on moist light soils. Therefore, the excess shoots of the large manna are cut off, and the green-leaved shoots are completely removed from the aforementioned Variegata variety. As a rule, pruning is carried out in the fall or spring. It is worth mentioning that a large manna can sometimes damage the films of ponds.

It is permissible to grow this amazing plant both in medium size in water bodies, and in rather large ones. Ideally, these reservoirs are made in a natural style. In general, a large manna is the most suitable plant for a background design. It goes well with large plants, but at the same time it is advisable to select for him such neighbors with whom he will not have rivalry, for example, cattail, butterbur or reed.
