From Latin, the word primrose is translated as the first, for early, spring flowering. A few days after the snow melts, buds bloom, striking the eye with the brightness of various colors. The flowerbed, consisting of correctly selected bushes, resembles the pattern of a Persian carpet. How to grow this beauty in your country house?
Selection
Polyanthus or multiflorous primrose obtained by complex crossing of primroses: common, spring, stemless, tall, Julia and other species.
The hybrid has collected all the best properties from its parents:
• size of inflorescences;
• good winter hardiness;
• long flowering;
• rich palette of colors;
• fast growth of bushes;
• unpretentiousness to living conditions.
Thanks to these qualities, it is in demand by gardeners.
Biological features
Polyanthus primrose is a perennial plant that forms a powerful fibrous root system. Leaves are whole, oblong-oval with a pointed end, slightly wrinkled. Collected in a basal rosette, have a slight pubescence. They remain unchanged under the snow cover.
Flowers of the correct shape, five-pointed, fragrant, collected in an umbrella-shaped inflorescence of 5-15 pieces. The height of the pubescent stem ranges from 10-25 cm. The color palette is varied from pastel shades to ink-blue shades. Blooms in mid-May. Some specimens are pleasing to the eye until the end of June. Closer to autumn, a second wave of bud opening is observed. The primroses go under the snow along with the flowers.
The fruit is a capsule in the form of a cylinder, contains a large number of tuberous seeds of a dark brown hue. There are up to 1000 pieces in 1 gram.
Better living conditions
Primrose prefers semi-shady places under the canopy of tall trees and shrubs. In the bright sun, it suffers from the heat, the leaves burn slightly, the decorative effect is lost. In shady places, the duration of flowering increases, the color of the petals is brighter.
Loves loose humus soil with good water permeability. On clay soils, sand, peat, humus, compost are added as baking powder and a nutrient component.
Relatively drought tolerant. In the spring, for the growth of bushes, there is enough moisture from melting snow, natural precipitation. During a prolonged drought in summer, regular additional watering is required.
In Central Russia, it is relatively winter-hardy. The specimens of polyanthus primrose grown from seeds have a greater survival rate. They quickly adapt to the conditions of the local climate and are more flexible. Store-bought ready-made options do not tolerate severe winters worse.
Use in landscape design
The bushes are decorative all summer long. At the beginning of the season, they delight with their inflorescences of various shades, in the summer with juicy, dense greens. Used in a mixborder as a flower garden foreground culture.
Looks great in solitary plantings against the background of the lawn. Plants matched to the color scale are able to create carpet patterns in flower beds in spring. In summer they serve as a green backdrop for other brightly flowering plants.
Primroses are "respectful" to their neighbors. They direct their shoots towards empty space, without interfering with others to develop freely. Herbaceous plants grow well next to them with similar requirements for living conditions. Combines with ferns, hosts, astilbe, geyher, miniature conifers.
He actively develops rocky hills, the shore of a reservoir, a lawn in a shady coolness.
Feels good in hanging pots, containers, as a decorative element of a gazebo, porch, staircase, balcony. After flowering, potted specimens are returned to the ground for wintering.
We will consider breeding methods for polyanthus primrose in the next article.
