Fight for cabbage. Part 1

It can be very annoying when time, effort and money is spent on growing a vegetable, and he suddenly starts to "be capricious". It refuses to grow and build up green mass; This will allow the leaves to become covered with dark spots, from which they dry or rot; then he does not want to make ovaries. How to deal with problems and help the plant overcome difficulties?

Let's start with the problems with white cabbage.

Why do the leaves turn blue

Blue cabbage leaves signal that the plant is lacking phosphorus. The reason may be too early planting of cabbage, when the soil has not yet had time to warm up well, which prevents the roots of cabbage from absorbing phosphorus.

If everything is in order with the temperature of the soil, then there is simply a lack of phosphorus in it. Feed the plant with phosphate fertilizer and the leaves will turn green again.

Why do the leaves wither

Cabbage is loved not only by people, but also by various insects and parasitic fungi. Soil contaminated with these fungi causes a root disease called "keela". The disease is expressed in growths and swelling of the roots. Such roots are no longer able to deliver nutrition and moisture to the leaves, and therefore they wither.

Young cabbage loves to feast on the cabbage fly, or rather, its larvae, which the fly lays during the period when we start planting cabbage seedlings in open ground. The larvae are very mobile, voracious and eagerly pounce on fresh plantings, digging into their roots. The consequences of such an invasion are the same as with the "keel".

To protect cabbage from such invasions, you need to take care of strengthening the root system. To do this, water the plantings abundantly, do not be too lazy to spud them. This will help the cabbage grow its root system, making it stronger and more resilient. Hilling cabbage is carried out when 7-8 well-developed leaves flaunt on the stem.

For prophylaxis against keels, the soil is disinfected with 0.4 percent suspension of colloidal sulfur before planting seedlings.

To control the cabbage fly, you can use biological pesticides that are effective against a small number of pests. In case of mass invasions, only chemical defenders will help. And for the prevention of sufficiently deep digging of the soil after harvesting and timely removal of weeds.

Why the head of cabbage is not formed

For successful growth, every vegetable needs its own personal planting schedule and a certain period to complete its life cycle. In areas with a cold climate, when planting cabbage of late and medium late varieties later than May 20, it is difficult to expect the plant to form heads of cabbage, since such varieties require a longer period for full growth.

To obtain early cabbage, seedlings are planted in open ground in early May, or in mid-April, having arranged for them shelters made of non-woven materials.

Mid-season and late varieties are planted in the middle of the last spring month.

Why does a head of cabbage crack

Such a misfortune often visits early varieties of cabbage. These varieties require 15 to 19 weeks of growth to fully mature. A delay in harvest creates a conflict between the inner and outer leaves of the head of cabbage.

As the plant's growth cycle is over, the outer leaves stop growing and the incoming nourishment creates new inner leaves that are full of strength and energy to break the outer leaves. Such opposition leads to cracking of the head of cabbage.

Head cracking is also triggered by sharp fluctuations in soil moisture during their formation.

Cabbage with several heads of cabbage

The appearance of a cabbage that looks like a three-headed fairy snake can be the result of:

• impact of low temperature on the apical points of growth;

• growing seedlings in a shaded place;

• mechanical injury or burns caused during feeding the seedlings with liquid fertilizers with a high concentration of chemical elements.

Leaky Leaves

Cabbage leaves adore the caterpillars of cute butterflies: cabbage whites and cabbage scoops. Their excellent appetite leaves only large veins from the leaves.

You can fight them manually by collecting caterpillar eggs in a jar for further destruction. You can bring in the help of celandine herb for fumigating cabbage, or tobacco dust mixed with lime. Sometimes naphthalene with sand (in a ratio of 1: 8) saves from caterpillars, which is sprinkled on the stem and soil around the stem.
