Botanical description
Rowley's groundwort belongs to the largest family of Compositae. It comes from Namibia, located in the southwestern part of Africa. Mountain conditions with poor soil, hot, dry weather forced the plant to adapt to habitat conditions.
There are two extraordinarily important features of the groundwort:
1. The ability to accumulate moisture in the leaves, limiting its evaporation due to a dense shell with a waxy coating, rounded. (Light for photosynthesis enters through a transparent, narrow slit in the leaf plate.)
2. Grow roots in any part of the stem in contact with the ground.
Thin shoots reach a length of up to 2 meters in the wild, and do not exceed 1 meter in indoor conditions. The annual growth in good "hands" is 20-30 cm. The strings, without human intervention, branch out on their own, intertwining with each other in bizarre patterns.
Pea leaves 1 cm in diameter are arranged alternately, attached to the stem with small petioles. Outwardly, they look more like unripe berries.
An amazing miracle happens once a year in the spring during flowering. Small pink-white elongated "lanterns" with crimson fluffy stamens-pistils on long thick peduncles suddenly appear among the original greenery.
The powerful tube ends in five tiny petals. They exude a delicate cinnamon-clove scent. In one dense basket there are several inflorescences at once, blooming gradually.
All parts of the plant are poisonous. They require careful handling from the owner. The ingestion of poison inside, if hygiene is not followed, is dangerous for young children and adults. Poisoning leads to liver damage, disruption of metabolic processes in the body.
Preferences
Growing on poor soil in the wild, the groundwort does not have any special requirements for the soil. Ready-made mixtures for succulents are suitable for him. A prerequisite for a loose, neutral medium is the substrate.
Drought-resistant specimens are rarely watered. In the winter-autumn period, moisture is reduced to a minimum.
In summer, it feels good at a temperature of 20-25 ° C. During the rest period, the heating indicator is reduced to 10-15 ° C.
Likes bright enough, slightly diffused lighting. On the southern windows at noon, the plants shade on sunny days. With a lack of light, the stems become thinner, the internodes stretch, the leaves fall off.
Composing compositions
Landscaping is applicable not only outdoors, but also indoors. Within one pot, you can create complex compositions from several plants.
Rowley's groundwort is excellent for crops similar to it in terms of habitat. At the same time, the neighbors occupy the upper space, the "beads" are located at the foot or hang down in beautiful cascades.
