The full growing cycle of beets will last for two years. In the first year, the plant forms a root crop, in which it accumulates nutrients, so that in the second year of life there is something to feed its offspring. But people take the fruit of her summer work from her in order to use the prepared substances for their own purposes.
Vegetable growers who love to have their own seeds so as not to depend on unscrupulous market dealers leave a few root crops in order to replenish their seed supplies next year.
Two harvests per season
Since the beet root crop is in demand today, it can be sown twice a season.
Early spring sowing will provide food for a person in summer, and beets sown at the beginning of summer will have time to grow root crops before frost, capable of retaining their healing components until next spring.
Moreover, do not rush to harvest. Beets are a frost-resistant plant, and therefore they can be left in the garden until late autumn, so that the white cabbage is not so lonely in the garden. Of course, if lovers of someone else's harvest do not wander around in your area. Otherwise, you can be left without beets.
Late harvesting will increase the shelf life of beets, because the longer they stay in the ground, the less they will have to languish in the darkness of cellars and basements.
Some points of cultivation
Although beets are resistant to frost, their seeds are thermophilic and sprout at temperatures not lower than plus 4 degrees. And the most favorable temperature, like for carrots, is 7-8 degrees.
Although they are not related in the family with carrots, they have many of the same requirements for living conditions. Beets, like carrots, love fertile, loose, moist soils. Moisture is especially important for seed swelling. Therefore, in vegetable gardens, you can often see carrots and beets growing in neighboring beds. Both plants only benefit from such a neighborhood, and it is easier for a vegetable grower to take care of them.
Seed - inflorescence
If you look closely at the seeds of the beet, then surprise is born. One achene looks like a miniature lump of particles grown together. The fact is that one beet seed is the fruit of a whole inflorescence. Therefore, several plants grow from such a seed at once.
If you leave everything to the will of God, you can be left without a beet crop. Therefore, it is worth appearing on the shoots in 1-2 real leaves, as we begin to carefully thin out, leaving 1-2 cm between the shoots.
But, this is just the beginning. When 5-6 leaves appear, we expand the freedom of shoots up to 4 cm.
After a couple of weeks, we finish thinning, leaving 5-6 cm between shoots for oblong beet varieties or 8-9 cm for varieties with round roots.
