Beets are not only delicious and nutritious, but also very healthy. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to get a good harvest of root crops. Let's see what the gardener could have missed? What makes the root crops small and the tops sluggish and frail?
Observe the watering regime
Beets can tolerate dry spells well. This is possible thanks to the long roots. But what do we really want: for the vegetable to survive or to produce good root crops? If the answer to the second question is yes, you should not make the beets languish with thirst.
The fact that there is a lack of moisture in the beds is indicated by the withering tops. And the trouble is not only that. From a lack of watering, the root crop becomes woody. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to carry out weekly watering of the plantings. It is better to allocate evening time for these works. The approximate water consumption is 15 liters per 1 sq. M. If it's hot outside the window, you can moisten the soil more often. And so that the moisture does not evaporate too quickly, it is worth mulching. Also, refreshing watering on the leaves has a good effect on vegetables.
However, everything is fine in moderation, and it is also important to stop watering on time. It's time to think about this when there are about 3 weeks left before harvesting. This time is necessary so that the root crop has time to ripen and in the future is well stored in the winter.
Feed root vegetables with nutrients
In the last decade of July, you can see the rapid growth of root crops. And this "growing organism" requires enhanced nutrition. During this period, you can use complex fertilizers. The gardener will come in handy:
• azofoska;
• nitrophoska;
• nitroammofosk.
If they are used dry, they take approximately 20 g each and scattered between rows of beet beds after watering.
Adherents of organic farming can be advised by solutions of manure or chicken droppings. Ash will help meet the potassium requirement of root crops.
You also need to monitor the condition of the beets in the beds. If she does not have enough of some trace elements, she herself will prompt attentive gardeners about this. For example:
• lack of phosphorus is manifested by a dull dark green tint of the leaves, and then redness;
• when there is not enough potassium, the leaf plate acquires a purple hue;
• if the soil lacks boron and magnesium, the growth of root crops slows down and leaves die off.
Fertilizers such as superphosphate, potash fertilizers will help to correct the situation.
As with watering, moderation should also be observed when feeding. If you overfeed the beds with organic matter, the tops will be more luxuriant, but the roots will slow down in development. The second side of the nitrogen surplus coin is the accumulation of nitrates. To correct this error, potassium chloride is used.
What salt to choose for beets?
You can come across a rather controversial advice that in order to get a good harvest of sweet beets, you need to water them with a salt solution. The root vegetable really needs sodium. But the salt in the ground is detrimental to many cultures. In addition, such a "top dressing" will make the soil poor in calcium content, or even completely unsuitable for gardening. Use potassium salt instead. Moreover, potassium for beets will also be beneficial.
Top dressing with potassium salt is done on the leaves. To do this, take 10 g of the substance for 10 liters of water. Ash can be used instead of fertilizer.
Harvest
If all the rules were followed during cultivation, beets should not disappoint during storage. It is advisable to have time for cleaning before frost. Before storing, dry under a canopy and cut off the tops. But it is better to leave the root so that the root crop from such a "wound" does not begin to rot.
