Fusarium is one of the most dangerous diseases of asters. Most often, it attacks beautiful flowers when charming buds begin to form on them, or when some buds are already trying to bloom. It is noteworthy that young plants are affected by this disease much less often, and, as a rule, only if the conditions are especially favorable for its development
A few words about the disease
The leaves on the asters attacked by Fusarium begin to turn yellow and gradually curl, the tiny heads of the buds quickly droop, and the beautiful flowers eventually slowly fade. On the stalks of asters, you can notice unpleasant oblong brown specks, and in the area of the root necks and a little higher, there are dark longitudinal stripes. The tissue of the stems in such areas is often torn, forming unsightly cracks. As a result of the ongoing changes, asters stop growing, look depressed and fade quickly. In addition, in the lower parts of the stems of infected asters, it is often possible to observe the formation of plaque of mycelium or fungal sporulation in the form of tiny pinkish pads.
The causative agent of Fusarium asters is the harmful parasitic fungus Fusarium, which lives in the soil in the form of resting thick-walled spores. In asters, it penetrates mainly through the roots, gradually covering the entire plants, moving at lightning speed along the vasoconductive system of the asters.
How to fight
If Fusarium rot has infected seedlings of one month old, it is necessary to promptly remove all infected seedlings together with earthy clods, and spill the surviving specimens thoroughly with "Fundazol".
Since there are currently no special drugs for fusarium, it is important to pay special attention to preventive measures. For example, you shouldn't grow asters in the same place where they grew a year ago. It is allowed to return the asters to the chosen place only after five to seven years - this is due to the fact that the causative agent of the ill-fated disease can persist in the soil for a very long time.
During the autumn digging of the soil, it is categorically not recommended to introduce fresh manure into it - it is better to use well-rotted compost or humus, which are applied per square meter in an amount of two to four kilograms. You can also add high-quality phosphorus fertilizers (per square meter - 20 - 30 g). In this case, slaked lime or dolomite flour is additionally added to acidic soils. And with the onset of spring, the soil must be deeply loosened and flavored with potash and nitrogen fertilizers.
When choosing a variety of beautiful flowers, it is better to give preference to domestic varieties - most of them are characterized by good resistance to fusarium. And before sowing, the seeds of asters are recommended to be processed in a solution of "Immunocytophyte" or "Epin". If there is neither one nor the other, it is quite enough to process them in succinic acid or in Topsin's solution. As for the soil, before sowing the seeds, it is treated with a solution of "Ditan M-45" or "Bazudin" or thoroughly steamed.
It is unacceptable to plant asters too densely - they should be equally well ventilated both at the root necks and at the base of the stems. After planting the seedlings, the plants need to be fed every two weeks - this will help reduce the likelihood of infection. By the way, asters respond well not only to root, but also to foliar feeding. In addition, after planting asters in the ground, it is recommended to spray it with a solution of copper oxychloride from time to time.
If infected asters are found, they should be immediately removed from the garden and burned.
And most importantly, do not forget that various ailments are most often associated with weakened cultures. If you strictly follow all the recommended care rules, you can not be afraid that your favorite flowers will get sick.
