The originality of standard plants always attracts. If hydrangea, rose, currant, willow grow differently - it surprises, fixes attention and seems like a curiosity. Standard options are offered in nurseries, but prices … Consider the available methods of self-creation. It is not difficult and even for inexperienced gardeners can do it
Choosing the source material for the trunk
Standard exotic is not the work of breeders and has nothing to do with new varieties. Plants are created exclusively by forming and grafting on the seedling of the selected crop.
Many types can be stamped. The most common are budlea, rose, chaenomeles, hydrangea. Weeping willow (goat), Japanese variegated willow will be an amazing decoration of the garden.
Almost all deciduous and coniferous plants are suitable for the trunk, it is important to grow them correctly and be able to form them. Most often they take mountain ash, ash, maple, bulldonezh viburnum, Hungarian lilac. If desired, species that give active root shoots turn into a neat tree. Everyone chooses the most affordable and well-growing varieties in their region, including shrubs and shrubs.
Stamp forms can also be found among conifers: pine, spruce, cypress, larch. If you are combining two species, it is important that the grafted plant is compatible with the stem.
How to form a standard plant
For an inept gardener, it is better not to look for special delights, but to create a simple stem by shaping the trunk, followed by trimming the growing crown. The result is always positive, but the process takes several years. Therefore, you need to get ready and not rush things.
Pick up the planting material. To determine the most suitable seedling, you need to adhere to certain criteria. The selected specimen should be free of knots and the trunk should have an even outline. Curvatures are inappropriate here, as in the future they will worsen and spoil the look of your brainchild. The most successful and easy-to-grow stems are obtained from berry yew, pine, maple, mountain ash, juniper, common privet.
After planting a young seedling, a strong stake or iron profile / pipe is driven in next to it. This is a guiding and supporting support for a growing stem; you will tie it to it as the crown grows and fix the entire vertical.
You need to grow to a certain height, which you have planned to get. During the growth period, all lateral shoots and active stem buds are removed, while stumps should not remain. Upon reaching the desired size, the apical shoot is truncated, and now we begin to grow the crown. Near the pinch, the buds are activated and shoots appear, as they grow, they also need to be cut off. The intervals are observed every 4-6 weeks.
This method helps to form a fluffy, voluminous, dense crown. With strong vegetation, this process can be completed in one year.
Grafting as a way to create a beautiful stem
The grown stem is an ideal stock for a variety of plants. The height is chosen individually, but more often it is 1, 3-1, 5 m. In order for your project to be successful, you should correctly choose a suitable botanical species for grafting. And also the selected graft should have a stronger vegetation and genetics. Examples of popular plant mixes:
• weeping elm is suitable for the coarse elm stem;
• pear - mountain ash;
• Varellea pine, Siberian cedar - Scots pine
• small-leaved linden - mountain ash.
The best time for a vaccination event will be in the spring - the period before awakening. In central Russia, this is April. When you have decided on the type of scion, take its stalk with good buds, there should be 3-4 of them. Prepare a sharp knife with sturdy steel and duct tape. Now we turn to the trunk: cut off the top with a knife and create a vertical split / notch on the cut.
We pass to the graft-cuttings. We cut off the top with an oblique cut, slightly stepping back from the upper kidney. Now create a neat flat wedge to insert into the prepared split. Now the last step: insert the stalk tightly into the stem and fix it with the prepared tape. Cover the upper cut of the branch with a garden pitch. Success depends on quick action and creating a perfectly flat cut surface.
Weeping species are made differently. Lovers of the exotic plant fuchsia, hibiscus, coleus, geranium, hydrangea (vanilla, lamlight, paniculata).
It will take a month to wait for the result. If the operation is successful, the kidneys will begin to wake up, and the emergence of shoots will give you the opportunity to relax and congratulate yourself on your successful work. For the first year, you don't need to do anything else. For the second summer, begin to form, i.e. for the density of the crown, pinch the shoots and by the end of summer you will have a formed crown of a standardized seedling.
