What is needed for a raspberry plantation

Raspberries are planted both in spring and autumn. But even with a spring planting, it is preferable to carry out work on the preparation of the site in the autumn months. What needs to be done on your personal farm in advance to become the proud owner of a fruitful raspberry plantation?

So that the raspberries do not "run away"

The choice of a site for raspberries must be taken very responsibly. In this case, it is important to take into account not only her preferences, but also the peculiarities of the growing season. Those who are relatively new in the cultivation of raspberries may be a wonder the ability of raspberries to "walk" around the site. Its peculiarity to give numerous shoots needs control from the gardener, otherwise the replacement shoots will independently choose the direction of growth and "run away" from the place chosen by the owner. Raspberries, unlike currant or gooseberry bushes, should not be planted on an unenclosed boundary, as it can easily move to a neighboring site if it is more sunny. Therefore, it is good to place bushes near fences, capital buildings not only in relation to protection from the wind and in order to accumulate snow near the raspberry tree, but also an additional precaution against the uncontrolled migration of bushes around the site.

It is not recommended to place raspberry bushes in lowlands, in areas with a high level of groundwater. Also, you should not choose a place for planting in the aisles of the orchard - this will create an imbalance in nutrition, competition for moisture, and it will also be difficult to combine care measures for these different crops.

Site preparation for planting raspberries

Raspberries are cultivated on one site for up to 10 years, while allowing it to move no more than a meter and a half forward and backward in the direction necessary for the gardener. But all the same, the land is severely depleted. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of its enrichment with nutrients before the seedlings are planted.

Raspberries respond well to organic fertilizers. The best option for fertilizing a place for a raspberry plant is rotted manure. You can also make compost on the plantation. Raspberries are in dire need of potassium. Moreover, it is better not to fertilize the plantation with potassium chloride, otherwise the presence of chlorine will inhibit the growth of the root system of shrubs. Opt for wood ash instead.

Before filling the area with fertilizers, it is required to clean the area thoroughly. It is necessary to dig up the earth, in the process of which carefully remove from the deep layers of the rhizomes of weeds and other plants, as well as clean this place from other garden waste. After that, the harvested fertilizers are scattered over the area of the future plantation and the soil is shoveled again. These works are carried out in the autumn months, so that by the spring of next year the site will be ready for early planting of raspberries. And if the planting is planned for the autumn months, then you need to have time to do all these activities at least a month before the scheduled date.

An approximate calculation of the required amount of nutrients is made according to this formula - per 1 square meter. area required:

• about 10 kg of organic matter;

• up to 45 g of phosphate fertilizers;

• about 350 g of ash.

It is important not only to qualitatively prepare the site before planting, but also to properly give it a rest after many years of growing raspberries on it. So, the earth needs to be allowed to recover, which will take about 4-5 years. After removal of old bushes, green manures are grown here with incorporation into the soil. In subsequent years, root crops and pumpkin vegetables are cultivated on the former raspberry grove. In the year of the return of the plantation to its former place in the spring, the site is occupied by early ripening green crops with a short growing season: dill, lettuce. Can be grown before breaking up raspberry radish.
