Almost every summer resident seeks to plant at least one or two strawberry beds on his site, but not everyone succeeds in harvesting a rich harvest - as soon as fragrant and juicy berries begin to ripen, not only people, but also birds rush to eat them. Is it possible to somehow save strawberries from bird attacks? As practice shows, it is quite, and now there are a lot of proven tools that help to cope with this task

What birds are partial to strawberries?

It turns out that absolutely different birds like to eat strawberries, including those that are usually considered useful. Crows, rooks, sparrows, starlings, pigeons, titmice and magpies help to get rid of not only a great variety of garden pests, but also an impressive part of the strawberry harvest! And this fact should in no way be discounted! How to save delicious berries from the invasions of a wide variety of birds?

Bright and shiny objects

They really do serve well in the challenging but important task of scaring away hungry birds. It is especially good to use used CDs and old video or audio cassettes for these purposes - magnetic tapes extracted from them are usually hung in areas that are well lit by the sun. Shimmering in the sun, all these objects will create the illusion of movement, and this, in turn, will not allow the birds to approach the berry bushes. And such a film also creates ultrasonic vibrations and resonates quite strongly, which the birds also do not like very much.

Suitable for scaring birds and any other objects that can reflect light - rain from a Christmas tree, as well as cellophane, foil, etc. True, this method has a certain drawback - with constant use of such objects, it can begin to ripple in the eyes.

Covering material

It is best to use a grid in this case. As a rule, such nets are made of plastic (polypropylene) or metal and are equipped with small diamond-shaped or rectangular meshes. This material will provide berry plantings with reliable protection from birds and will perfectly transmit both moisture and sunlight. In this case, there will be no obstacles for the implementation of foliar dressing or for the creative activity of numerous pollinating insects.

Scarecrow

This method has been known to mankind since time immemorial. And making a “human dummy” is quite simple: first, two sticks are knocked crosswise (the long one will become “the body”, and the short one will turn into “hands”), after which a canvas bag is filled with cotton, straw or newspapers (for the “head”). Then the "head" is put on a stick and the scarecrow is dressed up in clothes that have already served and have lost their relevance.

Of course, the birds will gradually get used to the scarecrow, so from time to time it needs to be modified, decorating the figure with all kinds of turntables, rattles, magnetic tapes from video or audio cassettes or unnecessary CDs. The thundering and shiny scarecrow will definitely not be liked by any bird!

Bells and rattles

An elementary scarer can also be built from pipe scraps or other scrap metal available at hand. You can even simply tie cans or beer cans to each other and equip them with a small pocket mirror - thanks to it, the birds will have the illusion of too bright shine.

It is quite permissible to use some feng shui tools to scare away birds - bells and the popular "wind chime" also do an excellent job with this task.

Distracting cultures

Another good idea is to plant crops on the site that will distract the birds from the strawberries. These include sea buckthorn and mountain ash with cherries - as it turned out, they attract birds much more. Of course, this does not give a full guarantee of protection for strawberry plantings, but it helps to minimize possible damage.

Electronic scarers

Recently, the popularity of such scarers has been steadily gaining momentum. But with their regular use, you can permanently drive birds away from the site, which can also be fraught with unpleasant consequences, because in this case you will have to fight pests on your own. So, when choosing a modern gadget, you should think carefully about how justified its use will be and carefully weigh both all the pros and cons of purchasing it.
