Chrysanthemum crowned (lat. Chrysanthemum coronarium) - an annual herb of the genus Chrysanthemum of the Asteraceae family. The homeland of the species is considered to be North America. Under natural conditions, the plant grows in the Mediterranean. Currently, breeders from different countries are working on the species, and today you can find many of its varieties and forms on the garden market. Crowned chrysanthemum is not only an ornamental plant, it is also used for food and as a medicinal raw material. Another name for the culture is the Crowned Golden Flower.

Characteristics of culture

The crowned chrysanthemum is characterized by annual plants that form branchy and fleshy stems up to 80 cm high during growth, topped with lanceolate (at the base), oblong (middle) and double-pinnate (apical) foliage of green color.

The inflorescences of the species under consideration are presented in the form of single baskets, which, in turn, are formed on the lateral shoots. Their number on one shoot does not exceed 7-8 pieces. The diameter of the baskets reaches 5-7 cm. Tubular flowers are yellow or brown in color, marginal (they are reed) - white or yellow (there are also two-color specimens), which depends on the variety or shape.

The flowering culture is observed in mid-summer and continues until late autumn. Flowering is abundant, rich, but only under favorable climatic conditions and proper care. Fruiting is active. The seeds are brown, small, viable for up to 4 years. The root of the culture is short, pivotal.

Growing features

Growing a topped chrysanthemum is as easy as shelling pears. The plant is light-loving, therefore it should be planted in open areas with diffused light. Shady areas will ruin the culture. Sowing can be carried out in open ground in early spring, and subsequently thinning.

Application

As already mentioned, the crowned chrysanthemum is used both for decorating gardens and personal backyards, and as a vegetable crop. Indeed, this species is very beneficial for health, because the stems and foliage contain a large number of vitamins (namely A, B2, PP and C), beta-carotene and trace elements required to maintain the proper functioning of the immune system.

They eat (mainly) the stems of the plant, the main thing is to collect them before coarsening. As a rule, the stems coarse with the advent of flowering. They are used in soups, egg dishes and vegetable salads. The foliage of chrysanthemum topped can be used for making salads, it will give them a spicy and very attractive taste. They can be paired with lettuce, arugula and even purslane.

It is not forbidden to use foliage and stems to prepare a drink, you can also add a small amount of fresh or dried flowers to it. Such a drink will give a good mood, vigor, lightness and increase immunity.
