Stevia honey (Latin Stevia rebaudiana) - treatment plant; a valuable representative of the genus Stevia, which, in turn, belongs to the Asteraceae family. Another name is honey herb. Typical habitats in nature are mountainous areas, slopes, plains, areas devoid of a large amount of atmospheric precipitation, but not exclusively dry. Natural habitat - Central and South America. Today, the plant is actively cultivated in many Asian countries, including Korea, China and Malaysia, as well as in South America.
Characteristics of culture
Honey stevia is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 150 cm high. Depending on the variety, the plant can form a very diverse form. The species is characterized by an oval shape of the bush, the widest part of which is located exactly in the middle. The plants are topped with rich green ellipsoidal foliage jagged along the edge. The flowers are white or creamy, small, often hidden under a lush row of foliage. The root system of stevia honey cannot be called powerful, the roots are not at all deep, and they cannot boast of rapid growth.
Growing features
To get lush bushes topped with lots of foliage, it is recommended to plant Honey Stevia in well-lit areas protected from cold winds. Soils are desirable sandy or sandy loam, alkaline, rich in organic matter and minerals, moderately moist. In no case should you try to grow a crop on poor, dry, waterlogged, heavy and highly acidic soils. On them, plants will lag behind in growth, bloom poorly, often get sick, which can lead to instant death.
Sowing Stevia honey seeds
On the territory of the Russian Federation, honey stevia is grown only through seedlings and only as an annual. Sowing is carried out in the first or second decade of March in seedling boxes with subsequent picking or in separate pots. The optimum temperature for keeping crops is 18-20C. It is advisable to put crops on a well-lit windowsill, before seedlings appear under the film. It will speed up the process of pecking seeds and their germination, of course, if you regularly water the crops and ventilate, removing the film for a few minutes.
It should be noted that the seeds of honey stevia are very small, they do not exceed 4 mm in length. For this reason, they do not need deep embedding. It is enough to evenly distribute them over the moistened soil, sprinkle them a little and spill them with a spray bottle. In general, after the emergence of seedlings, it is very important to monitor the level of moisture in the soil and air. If the air in the room is dry, you need to spray the room several times a day. Feeding is no less important. The first is carried out in the second month after germination. It is necessary to apply mineral fertilizers in liquid form to the culture, without getting on the young foliage. It is best to add organic matter before planting in open ground.
Beneficial features
For those who do not know, Stevia honey is a natural sweetener that is suitable for use by patients with diabetes mellitus and people who have embarked on the warpath with excess weight. Believe it or not, stevia foliage is up to 300 times sweeter than regular crystalline sugar. But sweetness isn't the only positive aspect. The herb contains a huge amount of vitamins, mineral salts, amino acids, essential oils, organic acids, pectins, flavonoids and other substances that can prevent many human diseases and ailments.
