Passionflower blue (Latin Passiflora caerulea) - a well-known representative of the genus Passionflower (or Passionflower) of the Passionflower family. Other names - Passion flower blue, Cavalry star. South America is considered to be the homeland of the species. In nature, a representative of the genus is found to a greater extent in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Belongs to the category of vines.

Characteristics of culture

Passionflower blue is represented by evergreen woody lianas, reaching 9 m during the growth process. They are characterized by very thin, but moderately strong shoots endowed with petiole, regular, rounded, finger-dissected, seven-lobed foliage of a dark green color and elongated internodes, of which in the process growth, spiral antennae are formed. The latter firmly cling to the support and allow the plant to "crawl" up the vertical surface.

The flowers of passionflower blue are quite large, sometimes reaching incredible sizes - the size of a fist or an open palm. Outwardly, they are very similar to the order, therefore the plant was named the Cavalry Star. The petals of the flowers are graceful, arranged in layers. On the edge there are large petals with a pointed tip, closer to the center - small ones. Passionflower blue blooms in spring and lasts about 4 months. Long flowering is due to the large number of constantly opening buds.

The fruits of the culture in question are soft, round, and edible. True, unlike other representatives of the genus, in passionflower blue, they do not have a pronounced sweet taste. It is for this reason that they are rarely used in cooking. Sometimes the fruits are included in tandem with fruits or berries and prepare pies, muffins and other sweet desserts. However, scientists do not advise avoiding fruits, because they have a unique composition. They contain a lot of vitamins and minerals.

Growing features

Passionflower blue belongs to the category of warm and sun-loving plants. It is recommended to plant it only in warm and well-lit areas. It is not forbidden to grow crops in room conditions, but in this case it is necessary to provide her with good conditions. If in the summer you can get by with a sunny window sill, then in the winter you will have to install additional lighting, providing it with light for more than 12 hours a day.

Despite the fact that in nature blue passionflower grows in areas where drought reigns, the cultivated species needs regular and moderate watering, especially when it comes to the moment of bud formation and flowering. After flowering, the volume of water is reduced, but watering does not stop. Do not exclude the spraying procedure. It is recommended to carry it out in the evening, when there is no bright sun.

Passionflower blue systematic feeding is required. When grown indoors, it is carried out during the spring and summer. Complex mineral fertilizers for exotic plants are suitable for these purposes. They, in turn, can be purchased at any garden center. Do not forget that the culture needs spring pruning. If it is not implemented, most likely, the plants will not please with abundant flowering, since the forces and nutrients will go to the development of a powerful green mass.

Passionflower blue transplants calmly. This manipulation is carried out when the capacity becomes small. It is advisable to transplant in the spring, trying not to damage the root system of the plants. First, the soil is spilled with water, then with the help of a spatula, they dig in the plant, pull it out together with an earthen clod and plant it in a new larger pot, adding nutritious soil.
