Asparagus thin-leaved (lat. Asparagus tenuifolius) Is a perennial monocotyledonous herb of the Asparagus family. This plant species is most widespread in East Asia, Southern Europe (from France to the borders of the Russian Federation).

Characteristics of culture

Straight smooth stem with flexible branches, on which are located scaly needles that perform the function of leaves, 0.2 mm wide and 2.5 cm long. Collected in bunches of 20-40 pieces. Lush ground shoots reach two meters in height. Inflorescences are heterosexual, dioecious. The perianth is white-green in color, 0.8 cm in length, with six short and rounded stamens. The fruits are bright red shiny berries (about 1 centimeter in diameter), in which black triangular seeds are formed. The fruit ripens for about two months. The rhizome of the culture is powerful, voluminous, accumulates many nutrients.

Reproduction and cultivation

In horticultural culture, asparagus is propagated not only vegetatively, but also by seeds. Since asparagus seeds are covered with a dark brown dense shell, germination is a rather laborious process. Three days before sowing, the seeds must be soaked in warm water at a temperature of 30 - 35 degrees Celsius, after which, to obtain strong shoots, the seeds must be calibrated and barbotted for a day, that is, through the water in which they are located, passed air from the compressor. After all these manipulations, the seeds are packed in filter paper, wrapped with cling film and removed to a warm place for germination.

The seeds that hatch are planted in fertile soil saturated with useful substances. Planting is carried out in the spring at a soil temperature of at least 10 degrees Celsius. The seeds are laid out in rows with an interval of 40 centimeters between the holes, to a depth of 3-4 centimeters.

The division of an adult bush of fine-leaved asparagus can be done in early spring during the regrowth of the shoots, and in the fall, when the ground shoots are almost withering. In order to divide the bush, it is necessary to dig it out of the ground without damaging the root system, shake it off and divide it into several fragments of 3-4 shoots with a sharp knife. For each shoot, it is necessary to dig a separate volumetric hole so that the roots do not twist and feel spacious. The separated fragments are planted at the same depth at which they were in a solid bush, with an interval of 50 centimeters between the stems.

After planting seeds or bush fragments, further care consists in regular weeding, watering, loosening and light hilling. Within two weeks after planting, the plant must be fed with manure or complex mineral fertilizers.

Usage

Asparagus thin-leaved is actively used both in cooking and in medicine. This is a wonderful dietary product, it contains a very small amount of calories (22 kcal per 100 g.
