Passion flower meat-red (Latin Passiflora incarnata) - a representative of the genus Passion flower family Passionaceae. Other names - Passiflora meat-red, Passiflora corporal, Passiflora incarnate. The homeland of the plant is considered to be North America. In the same place, the view can be captured in natural conditions. Currently, the representative of the genus under consideration is cultivated in large volumes in the Philippines, an island state located in Southeast Asia.

Characteristics of culture

Passion flower meat-red is represented by evergreen herbaceous vines, forming not too large stems that exceed the mark equal to 8 m in length. They are characterized by elongated rhizomes bearing buds, from which many shoots are formed during the growth process. The foliage, in turn, is petiolate, tripartite, with deep lobes and a finely serrated edge. In diameter, it reaches 15-20 cm. In the axils of the foliage, spiral tendrils are formed, with which the plants cling to the support.

The flowers are solitary, no more than 9 cm in diameter. They bear five lanceolate sepals. It is worth noting that the sepals have elongated peduncles and spine-like outgrowths. Their color is pale purple or deep purple. Like the passion flower blue, the flowers of the species in question resemble orders, for this reason it was commemorated with the Knight Star. Passion flower fruits are greenish or yellowish-green meat-red, they are often eaten. They boast a pleasant taste and jelly structure that is suitable for making preforms such as jam.

Medical use

Nowadays, the aerial part of the meat-red passionflower is used in folk and traditional medicine. As a rule, for medicinal purposes it is advised to use dried stems. They are collected even before the fruits ripen, then they are dried in a special chamber at a temperature equal to 50C, and a liquid extract is prepared. The latter is actively used in the treatment of insomnia, diseases of the nervous system and alcohol dependence.

The peculiarity of the extract lies in its ability to act on nerve impulses, thereby giving a sedative effect. In addition, the extract is able to eliminate headaches, cramps, unpleasant symptoms of menopause and increased blood pressure. It is also recommended for those who are daily exposed to stress and suffer from nervousness. The extract of passionflower meat-red has proven itself in the complex fight against myositis, arthritis, arthrosis, thrombosis and epilepsy.

Seed propagation

Before sowing, the seeds are subjected to scarification, which involves rubbing on both sides with sandpaper. This manipulation speeds up the sprouting process, since it significantly softens the shell. In addition to scarification, experienced gardeners advise soaking the seeds in lemon juice. It is recommended to sow seeds in February - March in separate containers filled with peat mixed with rotted humus and washed river sand. But first, it is important to disinfect the substrate, otherwise there is a high probability of damage to young plants by diseases and pests.

To speed up the germination process, it is recommended to cover the containers with plastic wrap. It should be removed regularly for watering and ventilation. With the emergence of seedlings, containers must be placed on a well-lit windowsill. As the seedlings grow, they are transplanted into a larger container. By the way, the culture tolerates transplantation well, but only in the spring. Plants should never be replanted in autumn or winter.

Care

Caring for the meat-red passion flower is not difficult at all. It is enough to provide the plants with regular watering and feeding in the spring-summer period. In autumn and spring, watering is recommended to be reduced, and feeding is not carried out at all. The only thing that needs to be done in the cold period is to build a good lighting, because the culture belongs to the category of light-loving plants.
