Woolly tulip is a perennial monocotyledonous herb belonging to the Liliaceae family, in Latin its name will sound like this:

Tulipa lanata … For the first time, this type of plant was introduced into culture by the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden and described in 1884 by Doctor of Philosophy, German-Russian botanist Eduard Ludwigovich Regel.

Area

The species of tulips in question belongs to the endemic group, because the area of its growth is very limited, in the wild, the plant prefers clay, sandy plains and slopes of the Pamir-Alai mountain system, located in the southeast of Central Asia and covering countries such as Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, China and Afghanistan. It is listed in the Red Data Books of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan as an endangered species under protection.

Woolly tulip is a very popular and demanded plant in Europe. Due to its decorative qualities and unpretentious care, the presented type of tulips often falls into the list of the most popular flower crops among gardeners, florists and landscape designers, it looks good both on a small personal plot and in rock gardens that occupy large territories.

Characteristics of culture

The woolly tulip is an ornamental flowering bulbous plant, reaching 40 centimeters in height. On a straight, gray-green peduncle pubescent with small villi, green leaves of a lanceolate-elongated shape with a corrugated, pointed, reddish edging, in the amount of 2 to 4 pieces, are arranged in the next order. Erect, single, large, actinomorphic goblet-shaped inflorescence reaches a height of 10 centimeters and 6 centimeters in diameter.

Perianth petals in the amount of 6 pieces, usually of a red hue with a yellow border around the edges and a black spot at the base, have a curved shape, narrowed towards the top and a shiny, smooth, silky texture. In the center of the inflorescence is a filamentous bundle of short stamens and elongated anthers, brown or dark purple in color.

The fruit is a miniature, dark green, elongated, tricuspid box with small black seeds; in a healthy fully developed plant, the number of seeds varies from 150 to 200 pieces. The bulb is small, no more than 3 centimeters in diameter with hard, leathery scales of a black-brown hue. The root system is annual.

Reproduction

Woolly tulip reproduces well both by seeds and by dividing the bulb. In the conditions of the garden plot, the vegetative method of reproduction is most relevant, because it is less laborious and the most effective, when dividing the bulbs, the first flowering begins already a year after planting, since the seedlings tie buds only after 5-6 years.

The presented flower culture belongs to the group of early flowering plants, the first buds begin to appear in mid-March, and this period lasts about a month, which directly depends on environmental conditions. Once flowering is over, it is the best time to harvest the seeds and divide the bulbs. In order to carry out the method of vegetative reproduction, it is necessary to remove an adult two-three-year-old mother's bulb and carefully separate the bulbous babies located around it.

After the children are separated, they must be thoroughly cleaned of husks and dirt, washed, rinsed with a solution of potassium permanganate as a disinfection and put in a dark, dry room to dry, the temperature in the room should be at least 20 degrees Celsius. After a month, when the bulbs are completely dry, it is advisable to move them to storage in a cooler room, in which the temperature does not exceed 12 degrees Celsius.

The bulbs are planted at the end of September in open ground and prepared soil in advance. With the timing of planting, it is advisable not to delay, because the earlier the plant takes root, the easier it will tolerate a drop in temperature in winter. The woolly tulip belongs to the category of frost-resistant plants, but in winter, due to the unstable temperature regime in central Russia, it is advisable to cover the bulbs with a peat and mulch layer.
