Bema tulip is a perennial herb belonging to the genus Tulip. In Latin, its name will sound like this:

Tulipa behmiana … For the first time, the species of the presented plant was discovered near the village of Iliysk, which is currently called the city of Kapshagai. In 1880, the tulip was described by the doctor of philosophy, botanist and gardener Eduard Ludwigovich Regel. In nature, it chooses desert, rocky, sunny places for growth, the homeland of the presented flower culture is Kazakhstan, mainly, it is found in the vicinity of the Betpakdala desert.

Characteristics of the species

Bema tulip is a herbaceous flowering plant about 40 centimeters in height. A straight, smooth reddish peduncle surrounded by elongated paired dark green leaves, decreasing in size upwards. The lower basal foliage has a strongly wavy, light green, sometimes reddish edge, and the upper, elongated linear shape of a dark green color.

A drooping, single, small, goblet-shaped inflorescence reaches a height of 8 centimeters. Perianth petals are usually yellow in color, but varieties with a red perianth are sometimes found. A distinctive feature of this species is that the perianth is uniform in color, without the spot at the base characteristic of tulips. The petals have a curved, narrowed upward shape, inside which there is a filamentous bundle of stamens and anthers, yellow, dark brown or purple.

The fruit is a small green elongated box with three valves; in a healthy, properly developed plant, the number of seeds can reach 300 pieces. The bulb is small, no more than 3 centimeters in diameter with rigid black-brown thyroid scales. Another distinctive feature of this type of tulips is that the stem goes deep into the ground, so the underground part of the plant is longer than the ground one. The flowering period begins in early April and ends in early May, the time for collecting seeds falls at the end of May until the end of June.

Cultivation conditions

Bem's tulip is an unpretentious plant, it can feel comfortable on any soil with any level of lighting, however, when creating unfavorable conditions, you should not count on bright and full bloom. Therefore, if you want to grow this flower crop in the garden, you need to pay special attention to the conditions of the natural "habitat" of the plant, the level of illumination and soil fertility.

The growing area should be elevated, sunny and protected from drafts. It is advisable to check the soil for acidity, since this representative of the tulip genus, like all its relatives, does not like high acidity, which noticeably affects the health of the bulbs. If bulbous plants have previously grown in the selected place, then it is advisable to change it, because diseases and pests of predecessors can affect the bulbs of a freshly planted plant.

This flower culture is propagated, mainly by dividing the bulb, you can sow seeds, but in this case, the first flowering of seedlings occurs 6-7 years after planting, moreover, this method does not preserve the uniqueness of the varieties.

Bema tulip, due to its unpretentiousness, bright colors and beautiful long flowering, often falls into the list of the most popular plants among gardeners and landscape designers. It looks great both on its own and in the company of other flower crops. With an abundant variety of varieties of this type of plant, you can choose options for flowering times, which will delight you with bright flowering from early spring to late autumn.
