Tiarella unofoliata (lat. Tiarella unofoliata) - decorative culture; a representative of the genus Tiarella of the Saxifrage family. The natural range is the western regions of Canada, as well as Alaska. One of the most winter-hardy species. It has many varieties that differ in flowering time, leaf shape and flower color.

Characteristics of culture

Single-leaved tiarella is a plant up to 45 cm high, forming large bushes. In Russia, this species is cultivated infrequently, despite its high winter-hardy properties. However, some gardeners have already appreciated the excellent decorative properties of some varieties of single-leaf tiarella.

Among them, the following varieties are especially popular:

* Sea Foam (Sea foam) - one of the most popular and early flowering varieties, represented by plants with attractive cut foliage with a clear pattern and cream-colored flowers;

* Starburst (Star) - popular among gardeners and early flowering variety, has beautiful decorative foliage;

* Black Velvet (Black Velvet) - one of the fastest growing hybrid varieties, attractive with dissected leaves with black ornament, forming lush bushes, and flowers of white-pink color;

* Morning Star (Morning Star) - early flowering variety, represented by plants with attractive decorative foliage;

* Cygnet (Swan) - the name of this variety speaks for itself, the variety is represented by plants, the foliage of which looks like a swan in flight, and fragrant pink flowers.

Growing features

Tiarella univalent, like its close relatives, shade-tolerant, develops well even in dense shade, for example, behind the wall of a high house. Sunny areas will not harm her, only in this case she needs more frequent watering and shading at noon hours. Plants lose their decorative properties without shading. Thiarella is unpretentious to soil conditions, but it develops best on well-drained, loose, slightly alkaline or neutral soils.

Tiarella unifolia is hygrophilous, it does not tolerate even a short drought. Watering is one of the most important crop care procedures. But it also has advantages, for example, the plants grow freely and bloom well even without top dressing. When planting, it is enough to add a small amount of compost or humus, as well as a couple of handfuls of wood ash. If the soils are poor, 1 top dressing per year is enough, it is carried out at the beginning of the growing season. It is not forbidden to apply fertilizers immediately after flowering, this will speed up the process of laying renewal buds.

Despite the fact that tiarella is a one-leaved winter-hardy, shelter for the winter will not harm it, on the contrary, it will protect it from freezing on harsh winter days. Particularly important winter protection for varieties and hybrids. And the shelter will also serve as protection for plants from the negative effects of spring sun rays, which are able to draw life-giving moisture from the leaves of tiarella, while the root system is still in hibernation. This can lead to weakening of plants or their death.

As with Heucher, the base of the bush in Thiarella single-leaved becomes bare over time, so hilling should be carried out periodically. Mulching is not prohibited. The species in question is most often propagated vegetatively. The bushes are subjected to division 1 time in 4-5 years, by this time they fall apart and acquire a completely unattractive appearance. The bushes are cut into several divisions, which are immediately planted in holes measuring 30 * 30 cm. The voids of the holes are filled with soil mixed with wood ash and rotted humus or compost. Watering after planting is required.
