Common meadowsweet (lat. Filipendula vulgaris) - a representative of the Tavolga genus of the Pink family. Other names are common meadowsweet, six-petalled meadowsweet, earthy nuts. In nature, it is found in the northern countries of Europe, as well as in the Caucasus. It also grows in Russia, namely in the Urals, Altai Territory, Primorsky Territory, Kamchatka and even Sakhalin. Typical places are meadows, forest edges, steppes and open glades.
Characteristics of culture
Common meadowsweet is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 80 cm high. It is characterized by a straight thin stem and a well-developed rhizome, endowed with tuber-like thickenings on individual roots. Thickenings, by the way, are often called nuts, and this is the reason for the popular name. The foliage is green, feathery, collected in a basal rosette.
The flowers are very small, consist of 6 petals, and are white in color. The flowers, in turn, are collected in lush paniculate inflorescences. The fruits are represented by pubescent leaflets. The flowering of meadowsweet begins in early summer and ends by the end of July. The culture enters fruiting at the end of July - throughout August.
Plant application
It should be noted that common meadowsweet is full of unique substances, for this reason it is actively used in folk medicine. So, the rhizome of the plant is famous for its high content of flavonoids, gulterin glycoside, tannins, starch and, finally, vitamin C, but the aboveground part boasts the content of essential oil, vitamin C and carotene.
The rhizome and its tuberous thickenings are of particular value in the plant. They are used as medicinal raw materials. A decoction of meadowsweet roots is endowed with diaphoretic, astringent, diuretic, choleretic, tonic, soothing, antiscorbutic and antisclerotic properties. Also, the broth is extremely effective in the fight for strong immunity during periods of flu and colds.
Especially widely decoction of meadowsweet rhizome is used in the complex treatment of cystitis, pyelonephritis, rheumatism, gout. It is also advised to use it for female diseases, namely infertility, cervical erosion, candidiasis, endometriosis, but in this case not inside, but in the form of douching. A decoction of meadowsweet rhizomes is effective for swelling.
The flowers and foliage of plants are also used in folk medicine. For example, during the time of tsarist Russia, a healing ointment was prepared from them for the treatment of rheumatism of the joints, radiculitis, osteochondrosis. It was rubbed into the joints, first keeping the aerial part of the plant crushed into powder with badger fat. The ointment not only soothed the pain, but also had a warming, anti-inflammatory effect.
In addition to its medicinal properties, meadowsweet is used in cooking. For example, nuts (root nubs) are edible and taste good. Flowers are brewed at all, getting a wonderful aromatic tea. They are also often used to flavor homemade liqueurs, wine and beer. It is also worth noting the decorative properties of common meadowsweet. It looks great in the garden.
