Rowan black-fruited (lat. Aronia melanocarpa) - a fruit crop from the numerous Rosovye family, the Russian-language name of which is due not only to the similarity of seed fruits to mountain ash, but also to the rich black color of the fruits.

Description

Chokeberry is a shrub that reaches two and a half to three meters in height and is quite strongly branching. However, such a height is characteristic of this culture only in our latitudes - at the place of origin, its height usually ranges from half a meter to two meters, however, sometimes there are specimens up to four meters high, but this happens extremely rarely.

Young shrubs are characterized by a compressed and rather compact crown, and in mature specimens it boasts an amazing spreading - the diameter of such crowns reaches one and a half to two meters. Shoots of the first year of life are most often painted in reddish-brownish shades, and after some time they are painted in dark gray tones.

Whole simple leaves of chokeberry are arranged on the twigs alternately. Their length ranges from four to eight centimeters, and their width is from three to five centimeters. The leaflets are characterized by an obovate or elliptical shape, pointed towards the tops and crenate-toothed edges. The upper parts of the leaves are always very shiny, leathery and dark green, and the lower ones are slightly pubescent and with a slight silvery tint.

Small bisexual flowers of chokeberry, painted in pinkish or whitish tones, fold into corymbose inflorescences, the diameter of which can reach six to eight centimeters. This plant begins to bloom in late spring-early summer, as soon as the foliage comes out, and the duration of its flowering is from one and a half to two weeks.

The fruits of such a mountain ash look like spherical berries (a little less often the berries can be squeezed-rounded), the average diameter of which reaches six to eight millimeters. As for cultivated varieties, they usually have larger berries. All berries shine and are painted in purple-black or black tones, however, sometimes berries with a pleasant bluish bloom are also found. The berries have a slightly astringent taste, sweet and sour, and they usually ripen towards the end of August or the beginning of September.

Where grows

The homeland of this culture is the eastern part of the North American mainland. On the territory of Russia, chokeberry was first introduced only in 1935 - then it appeared in Altai, and only after several years did it begin to actively spread throughout the territory of the former USSR.

Application

Chokeberries are eaten fresh or used to prepare a wide variety of preparations. Moreover, these fruits are incredibly valuable medicinal raw materials. By the way, even diabetics can easily eat them, moreover, they contain a substance that actively stimulates the production of insulin by the body. And the vitamin P contained in the berries contributes to rejuvenation to a large extent.

Contraindications

Chokeberry is contraindicated for people suffering from thrombophlebitis or hypotension (it is endowed with the ability to lower blood pressure), as well as with increased blood clotting. You should not use it in case of exacerbation of duodenal or stomach ulcers, as well as exacerbation of gastritis accompanied by high acidity. And during the period of remission, berries should be eaten in strictly limited quantities.

Growing and caring

Chokeberry is extremely undemanding to soils. Oddly enough, but on poor soils, it bears fruit much better than on enriched ones. Despite the fact that it is very shade-tolerant, it is possible to harvest good crops only in full light conditions. And this culture also boasts a truly impressive frost resistance - it can easily withstand a temperature drop to minus thirty-five or even minus forty degrees. As for reproduction, it can occur both by layering and by cuttings or seeds.
