Rhubarb wavy (lat. Rheum rhabarbarum) - not the most common representative of the genus Rhubarb of the Buckwheat family. Under natural conditions, it is found in Russia, mainly in the east of Siberia. Typical habitats are areas with sandy soils, forest edges and rare forests. It is considered a vegetable crop. It is actively used in cooking.
Characteristics of culture
Rhubarb wavy is represented by perennial herbaceous plants endowed with a powerful tap root system. The stem is erect, hollow, topped with long triangular foliage with a heart-shaped base. Basal foliage, in turn, sits on green petioles and has a wavy edge; the upper stem is sessile. The flowers are inconspicuous, small, yellow, collected in paniculate inflorescences, equipped with a six-leafed perianth. The flowering of wavy rhubarb is observed in late spring - early summer. The fruits are represented by ovoid brown nuts, equipped with veined wings.
Breeding features
The species under consideration is propagated by seeds and dividing the rhizome. The second method involves the separation of pieces of the rhizome, without digging out the bush itself, that is, digging into it from the side. It is important that at least one kidney is located on the dividend, otherwise the material will not take root. The first foliage that appears on a new specimen cannot be harvested; the plant should be given the opportunity to feed. Later, when the plant turns into a sprawling bush, you can collect, but no more than 1/3, otherwise it will take too much time to recover. Often this process is delayed for 2, and sometimes even 3 years.
In the second year after planting, the bushes shoot flower arrows, if there is no need for seeds, they should be cut off, otherwise they will self-sow. Moreover, a lot of nutrients will be spent on the growth of the arrow, respectively, less foliage will get. Of course, it will not lose its taste, but it will grind. It is important to remember that only young leaves and petioles are suitable for collection, the old ones have a rough structure and not a very pleasant taste. Whereas the abuse of old foliage and stalks threatens stomach upset, because they irritate its walls.
When harvesting, some subtleties must be observed. So, you cannot cut the petioles and leaves with a knife; you need to carefully cut them off, trying not to break off the new bud located at the very base. It is not worth storing the freshly harvested crop, it is better to put it into action right away - to cook compote, jelly, jam, make soup, vegetable salad, or put it in a marinade. In any form, the taste of the fresh harvest of petioles and leaves will delight even the most notorious gourmet.
By the way, caring for a culture does not take much time. We can say that wavy rhubarb is not a whimsical plant. However, you need to take care of him. It is recommended to systematically irrigate, trying not to overmoisten, loosen the soil and apply organic fertilizers in early spring. Wavy rhubarb should be planted in areas with fertile, moderately moist and loose soil. He will not tolerate community with waterlogged, waterlogged and heavy soils. Also, the culture has a negative attitude towards sites with a high occurrence of groundwater.
Usage
As already mentioned, wavy rhubarb is suitable for culinary purposes. In addition, it has established itself in the medical field. Still would! The foliage and stems of the plant are rich in vitamins (especially E and C, as well as B vitamins), organic acids, pectins, etc. It is famous for its tonic, antiscorbutic and laxative properties. And, by the way, the considered type of rhubarb can easily replace the now popular spinach.
