Large-flowered purslane (lat. Portulaca grandiflora) - flowering culture; a representative of the genus Purslane of the Purslane family. Belongs to the category of annuals. Comes from Argentina and Brazil. It is successfully cultivated in many countries, including Russia. It is one of the most common and popular species of the Portulacaceae family used in ornamental gardening.
Characteristics of culture
Large-flowered purslane is represented by annual herbaceous plants, reaching a height of 15 cm, equipped with light green juicy creeping stems with a reddish tint, densely covering the ground like rugs. The leaves are small, green-gray, alternately arranged. The flowers are single, up to 4-5 cm in diameter, depending on the variety, they can be simple, double and semi-double.
The color of flowers can be very diverse - cream, white, creamy, salmon, orange, yellow, pink, red-pink, red, brick-red. The large-flowered purslane has a number of features. Firstly, flowers bloom only in sunny weather; secondly, each flower lives only one day, but due to the formation of them in huge numbers, flowering looks continuous. Large-flowered purslane blooms in mid-June, flowering lasts until frost.
It should be noted that among gardeners the most popular varieties are with terry forms, but, unfortunately, they are presented on the market in limited quantities. This is due to the fact that terry varieties form a smaller number of seeds than simple ones, because the flowers form additional petals (20-40 pieces) due to the stamens and stigma of the pistil.
Growing features
Large-flowered purslane is unpretentious in care. Sufficiently regular and moderate watering, loosening and weeding is carried out only at the initial stage of development, later the plants form dense rugs that suppress the growth of weeds. Pests and diseases are not terrible for purslane, so preventive treatments are not required. However, it is important to provide the crop with optimal growing conditions.
It is recommended to plant purslane in sunny areas, otherwise the plants will not please with abundant and prolonged flowering and active growth. Preferred soils are sandy, loose, moist, an excess of nutrients is extremely undesirable, especially with regard to organic fertilizers. With an excess of fertilizers on the site, the purslane, instead of forming a large number of flowers, builds up a thick green mass.
Large-flowered purslane is propagated by seeds. In the southern regions, sowing is carried out immediately into open ground in early spring, in central Russia - only through seedlings. Reproduction by cuttings and division is not prohibited, these operations are carried out in the summer. To obtain seedlings, purslane is sown in special boxes or other containers, at the bottom of which drainage is arranged in the form of gravel or sand.
There should be no organic matter and peat in the soil mixture; purslane will not tolerate this. On peat soils, seedlings may not appear, and on those filled with organic matter, they may get sick and die. Boxes or containers are placed on pallets, which are filled with soft and settled water. Shoots appear in 5-15 days, there is no point in expecting friendly shoots. The first 30 days, seedlings do not grow rapidly. It is important to provide them with regular watering in the form of spraying from a spray bottle.
The dive is carried out very carefully, as the seedlings are fragile. It is recommended to use a match for the procedure. The seedlings are transplanted into a wide container, leaving a distance of 5-7 cm between them. A week later, the dived seedlings are fed with a liquid urea solution. Repeated diving is carried out, if necessary, into separate pots, it is better to give preference to peat pots, this approach will eliminate the third intervention for transplanting (into open ground).
Planting seedlings of large-flowered purslane into the ground is carried out in early June, by that time the seedlings reach a height of 5-6 cm and have at least 10 leaves. The optimal distance between plants is 30-35 cm. It is not forbidden to plant purslane in flowerpots, hanging pots and other garden containers that decorate the southern sides of balconies, porches and gazebos.
