Peony Steven (lat. Paeonia steveniana) - one of the many representatives of the Peony genus of the Peony family, introduced into culture back in 1842. He is a native of sunny Georgia. Refers to endemic species. In nature, it grows at home in forests, more precisely on the edges, as well as among shrub thickets. It is used in culture, but it cannot be classified as popular.

Characteristics of culture

Steven's peony is represented by rather large tall plants up to 1 m high, the strong stems of which bear complex, double or triple trifoliate, glabrous, pubescent green foliage. The lower part of the leaf is green-gray in color. The leaf lobes are sessile, in rare cases equipped with a short stalk, narrowed at the tips, most often have an oblong oval or ovoid shape. The lobe, located at the very apex, is large, pointed.

The flowers of the culture under consideration are rich yellow; specimens with yellowish-white and lemon flowers are also found. The petals of the flowers are concave inward. The flowering of the Steven peony is observed in mid - late May, which largely depends on the growing conditions. In Georgia, plants can bloom in the first half of May. The seeds of the culture give small, black with a bluish undertone. They ripen in late summer - early autumn.

Growing conditions

Steven's peony cannot be attributed to unpretentious plants. For successful cultivation, a crop requires special conditions. The species feels best on fertile, loose, loamy, neutral and slightly acidic soils. Steven's peony will not tolerate a close occurrence of groundwater. But the plant will make friends with acidic soils, but subject to preliminary liming. Negatively, the culture refers to waterlogged, saline, heavy and poor soils, growing on them will not give good results, soon the plants will begin to wither and, in the end, die.

The location for the culture in question is preferably sunny or slightly shaded, dense shade is highly undesirable. Do not plant plants under tree crowns or too close to buildings. It is not forbidden to plant on lawns in groups or singly, along garden paths, in ridges and mixborders. Growing in rocky gardens is possible. Culture does not put forward any other requirements. It is important to remember that the correct location and implementation of all aspects will allow the plants to form lush bushes, which can please with abundant flowering and large flowers.

Features of cultivation

Steven's peony is propagated mainly by seed and dividing the bush. The first involves sowing seeds in open ground immediately after collection. Spring sowing is not prohibited, but in this case, the seeds require a preliminary two-month stratification, which consists in mixing them with wet washed river sand and keeping in a refrigerator. When sown immediately after harvest, the seeds undergo natural stratification and germinate the next spring, while stale seeds sprout only after 2 years. Plants obtained by the seed method enter the flowering phase no earlier than four years. Therefore, this method is rarely used by gardeners.

Most often, Steven's peony is propagated by dividing the bush. Bushes 3-4 years old with at least seven stems formed from several buds are subjected to division. If the stems are pulled out from one bud, the plant cannot be divided. The division is carried out not earlier than mid-August, you can start the procedure a little later, but not later than the end of September, otherwise the divisions will not have time to take root and take root until future cold weather. The planting of the parcels is carried out in pre-prepared pits. By the way, the planting material itself must be equipped with at least two renewal buds and a good root system.

It is advisable to treat the roots with a potassium permanganate solution before planting, this process is required for disinfection. After delenki, they are kept in a solution of a growth stimulant, for example, a solution of heteroauxin. The exposure time should be at least 7 hours, preferably 10-12 hours. After drying, the delenki are immersed in small planting pits. When filling the voids, make sure that the renewal buds are not closed. Immediately after planting, high-quality and abundant watering is performed. Mulching is encouraged, but not required. Natural material such as peat or fallen leaves can be used as mulch.
