Tree peony (lat. Paeonia suffruticosa) - a flowering semi-shrub and shrub culture belonging to the genus Peony of the Peony family. Is a native of East Asia. Nowadays it is actively cultivated in China, European countries and Russia. This species belongs to the category of hybrid, he also gave the name to the group of peonies of the same name. Today, a huge number of varieties and hybrids are hidden under the tree peony. Another name is semi-shrub peony.

Characteristics of culture

The tree peony is represented by semi-shrubs or shrubs up to 200 cm high with light brown stems, enveloped in large double-feathery rich green foliage. But this is not the only beauty of the culture in question. Its main feature is the abundance of huge flowers of various colors.

Surprisingly to many, the flowers of the tree peony reach 25 cm in diameter. The color, depending on the varietal accessory, can be snow-white, red, yellow, crimson and even pink. Almost all specimens have a dark spot located at the base of the petals.

Today, there are varieties on sale that differ in semi-double and double flowers, which give the plants a special appeal and beauty. By the way, even after flowering, plants still delight in rich color due to large foliage and forming fruits.

The tree peony belongs to the category of frost-resistant crops, for example, in the Leningrad and Moscow regions, plants winter without shelter. Whereas in Siberia and the Urals, a shelter in the form of spruce branches is welcome. It should be noted that the tree peony is resistant to diseases and pests, they rarely appear on plants, although in unfavorable climatic conditions and in the absence of proper care, shrubs readily infect.

In the same place, the culture in question can be grown for 20-25 years. The flowering of the culture is observed mainly in late spring - early summer, which largely depends on the climatic conditions of cultivation and the name of the variety or hybrid.

Popular varieties

Today, the tree peony, or semi-shrub, has more than 500 varieties, and most of them are the merit of Chinese breeders who value the crop in question for its high decorative properties.
