Yarrow tansy (lat. Tanacetum millefolium) - herbaceous perennial plant
genus Tansy (lat. Tanacetum) families
Astral (lat. Asteraceae) … The surface of the pinnately dissected leaves of the plant is densely covered with soft or silky, adpressed pubescence, which gives the basal rosette of leaves a silvery appearance. Quite a picturesque plant, suitable for decorating flower beds. Unpretentious and drought-resistant. Prefers steppes, rocky slopes and exposed limestones. It is listed in the Red Data Books of different regions of our country.
Description
The basis of the perenniality of Tansy milfoil is its underground rhizome with roots, which penetrates deep into the soil. On the surface of the earth, a rosette is formed from basal pinnately dissected openwork leaves of gray-green color, located on long petioles. A gray or gray-silvery shade gives the leaves a dense pubescence of soft, pressed hairs. The few erect stems grow, depending on environmental conditions, to a height of fifteen to sixty centimeters. The stems, like the surface of the leaves, are covered with dense, compressed pubescence. Stem leaves are few and small in size. Unlike basal leaves of a rosette, stem leaves do not have petioles, they are sessile.
In June-July, the picturesque openwork greenery of the Yarrow tansy is complemented by the bright yellow flower baskets characteristic of the plants of the Astrov family. The baskets may not have pronounced marginal petals, thus resembling the flowers of Tansy, or they may have. The edge petals are shaped like Sunflower petals. Beautiful rounded teeth adorn the edge of the petals. The middle of the basket, folded with tubular flowers, also resembles the honeycomb middle of the Sunflower. The general appearance of the flower basket is similar to the miniature sunflower hats. Flower baskets are located at the top of the stem, forming corymbose, loose, spectacular inflorescences.
The crown of the vegetation cycle of Tansy milfoil is ribbed-cylindrical achenes, the number of ribs of which ranges from five to nine, up to two and a half millimeters long and up to seven tenths of a millimeter wide.
Habitat conditions
Yarrow tansy is a very unpretentious plant. The plant grows successfully in dry steppes, on rocky slopes or on exposed limestone rocks. This is a real find for summer residents who do not have the conditions or time for regular watering of flower beds, since Tansy is a very drought-resistant plant that has adapted to provide itself with moisture. Loves places open to sunlight, and calcium-rich soils.
Usage
Yarrow tansy is a very spectacular and picturesque plant used for decorative purposes. Its pinnately dissected pubescent leaves with a silvery sheen form openwork rosettes that can decorate any type of flower garden. During the flowering period, the rosettes are additionally decorated with sunny yellow flower baskets, similar to miniature sunflower hats, forming friendly corymbose inflorescences.
Most likely, the plant has healing powers, like many other representatives of the Tansy genus. However, the paucity of the plant does not give rise to such use. On the contrary, in order to preserve this picturesque type of plant on the planet, Tansy milfoil is listed in the Red Data Books of many regions of our country and is under human protection.
