Red tansy (lat. Tanacetum coccineum) - herbaceous perennial flowering plant of the genus
Tansy (lat. Tanacetum) families
Astral (lat. Asteraceae) … The plant was transferred to the genus Tansy from the genus Pyrethrum (lat. Pyrethrum), which was abolished by botanists. It is a popular ornamental plant, simultaneously protecting its neighbors in the flower garden from harmful insects, exuding an unpleasant smell for them. The common name for this species is Persian chrysanthemum. In the countries of the Middle East, powder from the flowers of this plant has long been used against lice.
Description
Red tansy is a herbaceous perennial plant, the erect stems of which, depending on environmental conditions, grow in height from twenty to sixty centimeters. Petiolate oblong leaves, cut once or twice, give the plant a picturesque openwork look, traditional for plants of the Tansy genus. Leaves are green in color, usually with a bare surface of leaf blades.
The tops of the shoots are decorated with single, showy, relatively large inflorescences-baskets. A two-three-row protective envelope of a flower is formed by herbaceous leaves, the outer side of which is often pubescent with sparse appressed hairs. The inner leaves of the envelope have an oblong-linear shape, and the outer ones are linear-lanceolate. The structure of the flower basket is standard, consisting of yellow middle tubular flowers and pseudo-ligate petal flowers, which can have different colors: white, pink, red.
The fruit of the growing cycle is longitudinal ribbed hemicarps with a length of two to three millimeters. The top of the achene looks like a miniature crown.
Usage
Quite large inflorescence baskets with bright marginal petals and green openwork leaves make Red Tansy a popular ornamental perennial plant that is grown in various countries.
In the Middle East, since ancient times, a powder was prepared from the flowers of red tansy, which was called "Persian powder" or "Persian peliatr". It was used to fight head lice. In agriculture, this powder is used as a natural non-synthetic insecticide in the fight against insect pests. Large doses of powder are dangerous to human health, so a measure is needed in everything.
Since the Persian chrysanthemum contains "pyrethrum" in its plant tissues, which discourage harmful insects from planting, the plant is planted next to garden crops or ornamental plants in order to protect them from the invasion of bedbugs, voracious and prolific aphids, ticks, cabbage caterpillars and other pests that love to devour the fruits of human labor.
Of course, in terms of the strength of the effect on pests, Red Tansy is inferior to Cinerarielist Tansy (Latin Tanacetum cinerariifolium), which is an industrial raw material for the manufacture of an insecticide called pyrethrin, but it is quite suitable for use in summer cottages, allowing you to extract two benefits from the plant: to decorate the site with a spectacular plant and repel insect pests.
