Spotted fingernail (lat. Dactylorhiza maculata) - a herbaceous perennial plant of the genus Palchatokorennik, or Dactyloriza (Latin Dactylorhiza), ranked by botanists as belonging to the Orchid family (Latin Orchidaceae). The external appearance of the plant is similar to other species of the genus Dactyloriza, so, at first glance, only botanists can distinguish it from their fellows. Its healing abilities are also similar, which distinguish the underground tubers of the terrestrial Orchid.
What's in your name
Since plants of the genus "Dactylorhiza" were "taken away" from the genus Orchis (Latin Orchis), a relative of the Orchid family, one can often find in the literature on floriculture such names of this species as
Spotted orchis (Latin Orchis maculata), or speckled orchis
In addition, different versions of the translation of the Latin name of this species into Russian were the reason for the existence of numerous synonymous names expressing the same meaning, but sounding differently. For example,"
Fingernail speckled », «
Dactyloriza spotted », «
Toecorn spotted
».
Area
Spotted fingernail, preserving the genetic memory of its tropical relatives, prefers damp places that exist in mossy European and Siberian forests, in clearings and wet flooded meadows, in raised bogs, drowning in sphagnum mosses saturated with water. Only, unlike tropical epiphytic orchids, the plant can endure the winter period.
Description
In the spotted fingernail, as well as in its fellow fingertip Fuchs, all hope for perenniality is based on the root system, which acquires an eccentric shape due to the flattened finger-like tuber with adventitious roots.
From the root system, a single, erect, strong stem with few linear-lanceolate leaves is born on the surface. On the dark green surface of the leaf blade, nature has painted purple rounded spots, giving the leaves a speckled appearance. The end of the leaves can be pointed or obtuse. Almost flat leaves deviate from the stem, forming a green background for the inflorescence.
The stalk of the spotted fingernail ends in a spike-shaped inflorescence formed by numerous small flowers with a structure typical for plants of the Orchid family. The main background (whitish, pink, red, lilac) of the three-lobed lips nature has awarded with bright purple specks, giving the flowers an elegant and flirtatious look. The lateral lobes of the lip are somewhat longer than the middle obtuse lobe of a triangular shape. The flowers are closely pressed against one another, giving the inflorescence the appearance of a dense spike.
The spotted fingernail reproduces through the sowing of small seeds hiding in a ribbed fruit box, colored orange-brown. Fruit pods surround the peduncle on all sides, giving the impression of red domestic cockroaches crawling along the stem.
Use and healing abilities
The height of the spotted fingernail varies from fifteen centimeters to half a meter and is suitable for any type of flower garden in areas with a temperate climate. Strict lanceolate green leaves are good on their own, but, of course, a flowering plant that blooms in the first two summer months looks much more spectacular, gradually revealing its miniature picturesque flowers.
The plant also looks fascinating during the ripening period of the fruit pods, if the plant has time to set the fruits and wait for them to ripen before the arrival of cold weather, which does not always happen with our climatic vagaries of nature. So, the spotted fingerling plant growing in the Main Botanical Garden of Russia, which is located not far from VDNKh in Moscow, does not bear fruit for its guardians.
The healing abilities of the plant are concentrated in its tubers, which are harvested according to the same scheme as the collection of Fuchs' fingernail tubers.
Similarly, the use of dried tubers, which have the following effects on the human body: neutralization of poisons, fortifying, softens cough, anti-inflammatory, enveloping.
