Golden henbane (Latin Hyoscyamus aureus) - a perennial or biennial herbaceous succulent plant from the genus Belena (Latin Hyoscyamus) of the Solanaceae family (Latin Solanaceae). In the wild, the plant has chosen for its life a number of deserts of North Africa and the Middle East (Libyan, Arab, Nubian and others), the coast of the pristine Red Sea, Mountain South Sinai. Golden henbane has adapted to accumulate moisture for future use in its leaves and stems in order to withstand dry periods of the year. A very spectacular plant accumulates toxic substances in its tissues, protecting its life in difficult conditions from enemies and pests. With the right dosage, toxic substances turn into a healer for human ailments.
Description
Golden henbane is a very spectacular plant with rather short, weak and juicy stems, reaching a height of thirty to ninety centimeters. The stem actively branches, forming a lush cone-shaped bush.
Palm-shaped large petiole leaves with a heart-shaped base and an oval-rounded shape consist of lobes, the edges of which are decorated with wide and sharp teeth, giving picturesque leaves and the entire plant as a whole. The leaf plate is soft, colored green, slightly bluish in color. Succulent leaves, succulent, covered with short whitish pubescence. Both the stem and the flower calyx are covered with hairs.
Large (up to four and a half centimeters in diameter) showy single flowers, or smaller, forming long racemose inflorescences, protect their delicate corolla with a bell-shaped calyx ending in pointed triangular sepals and generously covered with short whitish pubescence. The yellow petals of the corolla picturesquely fold back their edges, revealing to the world the beauty of their deep, funnel-shaped pharynx, colored by nature in a noble purple color. Stamens with grayish-white anthers and pistils on relatively long purple legs peep out mischievously from the purple throat. The flowers of Golden Belena are hermaphrodites.
The crown of the growing cycle is the fruit - degenerating capsules with a domed lid, inside which are hidden disc-shaped or kidney-shaped, finely cut seeds.
Use in decorative floriculture
Beauty lovers are not afraid of the poisonousness of Golden Belena. Spectacular large leaves with clearly defined light veins, with a soft wrinkled jagged edge, as well as large and bright funnel-shaped flowers, the corolla of which harmoniously combines yellow and purple colors, are popular.
The plant is rather unpretentious to the composition of the soil and can grow both on loose (sandy) soils and on medium (loamy) and even heavy (clay) soils. It is only important to create a good drainage system, since stagnant water is destructive for the plant. The acidity of the soil also has a wide range, tolerated by Golden Belena, up to very alkaline, which cannot be tolerated by most of the plants on the planet.
As for the landing site of Golden Belena, it should be open to sunlight, since the plant will not develop in the shade.
Healing abilities
Golden henbane does not violate the traditions of the genus, accumulating in its parts toxic alkaloids, which in large quantities are dangerous to human health, and, when properly dosed, turn into medicines. For the manufacture of medicines, the soft and succulent leaves of the plant are used.
Desert aborigines use the leaves for intoxicating smoking, allowing them to stay in a philosophical mood in difficult conditions of life.
