Delphinium beautiful (Latin Delphinium speciosum) - native of the subalpine meadows of Central Asia and the Caucasus; perennial representative of the genus Delphinium of the Buttercup family. Characteristics of culture
Delphinium is beautiful, or Caucasian, is represented by perennial herbaceous plants with a height of no more than 80 cm. There are varieties on sale with a height of less than 50 cm, they are used to decorate small rocky areas and gardens. The stems of the species under consideration are simple, erect, less often curved, densely leafy, pubescent with short hairs over the entire surface. The foliage is reniform or cordate, pubescent, dissected into 3-5 lobes of various shapes. So, the median lobe is rhombic, the lateral ones are unequal, wide, jagged.
The flowers are small, rich blue or bright blue, collected in dense racemose inflorescences, which reach a length of 35-45 cm. A distinctive feature of the beautiful delphinium flowers is the presence of thick arcuate pubescent pedicels exceeding 6-7 cm in length. spur bent down, it, in turn, is equal to 1-2 cm.
The flowering of the beautiful, or Caucasian, delphinium is observed in the second decade of July - the first decade of September, but in many respects the flowering time depends on the growing conditions, care and climate. The species in question cannot be called frost-resistant, it can withstand temperatures down to -23C. However, under good cover, the plants are able to withstand lower temperatures. It is not too whimsical to growing conditions, but proper care promises abundant flowering, rich colors and active growth.
Seed collection and sowing
The state of future seedlings depends on the correct collection of seeds. It is recommended to carry out this process in sunny calm weather. For collection, brown fruits are selected, they are removed and laid for ripening in a dry, well-ventilated room. After the seeds are husked and sent to paper bags or bags made of natural material. Overripe fruits are unsuitable for assembly, or rather, they will not be able to collect them, alas, most likely they will crumble at the first contact.
By the way, many years ago, scientists discovered one interesting fact, it turns out that if you store the seeds of delphiniums at low temperatures in an airtight container, they will remain suitable for sowing for 10-15 years, while the seeds stored in paper bags will lose their germination already in the second year. That is why manufacturers offer delphinium seeds in special packaging, the inside of which is covered with aluminum foil. At home, you can use glass containers and a freezer to extend the shelf life.
Sowing is carried out in March - early April in seedling containers with a height of at least 15 cm, otherwise future seedlings will feel unwell. It is not forbidden to sow beautiful delphinium in separate containers, so picking can be avoided. The seedling container is filled with a mixture made up of garden soil, sand and humus, taken in equal parts. You can use a commercially available substrate. Sowing delphinium seeds does not imply deepening, it is enough to scatter them over a moistened substrate and lightly sprinkle them with soil, and then carry out careful watering.
Seeds should not be spared. Surprising but true! With dense crops, germination is higher than with sparse crops. After sowing, the containers are placed in cool rooms with a temperature of 10C, with the emergence of seedlings they are moved to a room with a temperature of 15C. Higher temperatures are not recommended. With the appearance of two true leaves on the shoots, a pick is made. Young seedlings are planted in the ground in June, by that time they will braid the whole lump in a pot. Caring for a beautiful delphinium is similar to the actions of cultivating other species.
