Garden delphinium (Latin Delphinium x ajacis) - a species obtained by crossing two types of delphiniums - eastern and dubious. Belongs to the Buttercup family - one of the many families widely used in gardening. In nature, the garden delphinium does not occur. It is actively used in culture, its spectacular hyacinth form is especially famous, which forms thick terry inflorescences of a wide variety of shades during the growth process.

Characteristics of culture

Garden delphinium is represented by annual herbaceous plants, characterized by a low-branched dense stem, reaching a height of 1 m, and bearing complex, dissected, short-petiolate or sessile green leaves. The flowers of the garden delphinium can be either simple or double, they reach 3-5 cm in diameter. Their distinctive feature is a long spur and an irregular shape.

The color of the flowers is varied - purple, lilac, lilac, blue, red, brick, pink and snow-white. The species in question boasts a long and abundant flowering, as a rule, this process begins in early summer and ends in late autumn. The fruits of the garden delphinium are pubescent, contain small brownish triangular seeds.

To this day, breeders are working on the species in question, and today you can find many interesting forms and varieties on the market. One of the most attractive, as mentioned above, is the hyacinth shape. It is represented by tall plants bearing dense double flowers, collected in brushes, reaching a length of 20-30 cm. By the way, in addition to tall specimens, the species has a number of dwarf varieties that are suitable for decorating flower beds and garden paths.

Subtleties of care

Garden delphinium, like other representatives of the genus, belong to the category of whimsical plants. They need careful and regular care, non-observance of the rules and nuances of cultivation threatens with many problems, including diseases and pests, which are not so easy to eradicate. Particular attention should be paid to the care of feeding. Without them, plants will bloom poorly and develop slowly. The first feeding is carried out when the shoots of the delphinium reach a height of 10 cm. A weak solution of manure is used as fertilizer. It is not recommended to fertilize plants with fresh manure, otherwise burns cannot be avoided.

In addition to feeding, weeding and loosening are important for plants. These procedures are carried out as needed. In order to avoid unnecessary actions, it is advisable to mulch the soil near the delphinium. Peat or humus can act as mulch. It is important to remember that dense bushes of the species in question need thinning, which consists in cutting or breaking off weak shoots. Such a procedure will provide a brighter and more abundant flowering, because extra shoots will not take away nutrients that other parts of the plant have. In addition, this approach will protect the culture from pests and diseases, because thickened plantings are a favorable environment for the development of such.

By the way, you can try to root cut shoots, however, you should not expect a guaranteed result. To stimulate and accelerate the rooting process of the cut cuttings, it is advisable to treat the cut with growth stimulants. After planting in the ground, the cuttings are provided with a sufficient level of humidity and an optimal temperature regime; under such conditions, the cuttings will take root in about 21-30 days. By the way, about watering. Watering is also necessary for plants; the culture in question does not tolerate drought. Watering is carried out regularly, but in moderation. It is impossible to overmoisten the plants.
