Delphinium labiate (Latin Delphinium cheilanthum) Is one of the most attractive representatives of the Delphinium genus of the Buttercup family. He is called the progenitor of most of the cultivated species on the garden market. In nature, this representative is found in wet meadows and glades of the eastern regions of Siberia. Belongs to a group of popular species, is actively used by gardeners and flower growers for landscaping summer cottages and backyards. During flowering, plants envelop the garden with extraordinary beauty and uniqueness, for which labiate delphiniums are valued all over the world.
Characteristics of culture
Delphinium labiate is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 1 m in height, in culture there are also undersized specimens up to 40-50 cm high. The latter are suitable for decorating flower beds, sides of garden paths and rocky gardens. Tall ones, in turn, will decorate unsightly outbuildings, and will blend in tandem with other flower crops in mixborders.
A distinctive feature of the species under consideration is a bare and smooth to the touch stem, equipped with short, barely noticeable hairs at the base. No less interesting is the foliage of the labiate delphinium, it is surprisingly two-colored (green on the upper side, gray-gray on the lower side, and on the upper side, pubescence is noticeable only along the veins, when the lower side is completely covered with small hairs). Foliage, by the way, has petioles, they are also pubescent.
The flowers are small, collected in multi-flowered not too ramified racemose inflorescences. The flowers sit on bare pedicels, slight pubescence is observed in the area of the bracts, which also have a place to be. By the way, they have an elliptical or oval shape.
The species is winter-hardy, does not need shelter for the winter, although shelter is welcomed in snowless and harsh winters. Otherwise, the labiate delphinium is unpretentious, however, compliance with optimal growing conditions and careful care allows you to enjoy abundant flowering and active growth, which is considered the key to an ideal garden or flower garden.
Reproduction
The labiate delphinium reproduces in several ways:
1. Seed method. One of the most common breeding methods. Sowing is carried out in early spring (usually in March) in seedling boxes filled with a nutritious, moist and disinfected substrate. Moreover, the seeds are not buried, but only pressed against the soil, sprinkled with earth and watered abundantly. Seedlings appear amicably, as a rule, in 10-14 days. The picking into separate containers is carried out after about 30-40 days.
2. Cuttings. Another common method of breeding delphiniums. It involves cutting cuttings from shoots at the root collar. The prepared cuttings are planted in wet sand, while the container is not exposed to light, but in a slightly shaded place. Rooting occurs in 20-25 days, then you can transplant into open ground (immediately to a permanent place).
3. Division of rhizomes. A great way to get delphiniums that will delight you with abundant flowering next year. For these purposes, delphiniums are selected that are at least 4-5 years old, three-year-olds are also suitable for division, but they must be well developed. The rhizome is divided into several parts, but so that each division has a developed system, otherwise they will not take root. The disembarkation is carried out immediately, immediately to a permanent place. Before rooting, the delenki are abundantly moistened, preventing water from entering the aboveground parts.
Care
This process does not take much time, and consists in the usual procedures, namely weeding, regular and moderate watering, prevention and control of pests and diseases, as well as feeding, on which the growth activity and the abundance of flowering depend. It is important to remember that the labiate delphinium needs at least three additional fertilizing during the season. The first is carried out with the onset of warmth (about April), the second - at the beginning of flowering (end of May - June), the third - the end of flowering. Another crop care procedure is the garter. We are talking about tall specimens, because under the influence of a strong wind or the weight of their own inflorescences, the stems can break.
