Delphinium blue (Latin Delphinium glaucum) - a flowering representative of the Delphinium genus of the Buttercup family. Belongs to the Angiosperms department, the Dicotyledonous class. Other names are blue larkspur, blue larkspur. It is a herbaceous perennial, although this species cannot boast of durability. In nature, blue delphinium is found in regions of Central Asia, in particular in Tibet, as well as in the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal and the state of India located in the northeastern part of the country, called Sikkim. Typical habitats are rocky areas and dry meadows.
Characteristics of culture
Delphinium blue is represented by perennial herbaceous plants no more than 40-50 cm high, similar in appearance to the large-flowered delphinium, or Chinese (lat. Delphinium grandiflorum), although it has some distinctive features, therefore it was raised into a separate species. The foliage of the species under consideration is complex, finger-separate, rounded in shape, has short lobes. The flowers are small, blue-blue, no more than 3-4 cm in diameter, equipped with a dark eye, collected in loose paniculate inflorescences.
Delphinium blue, light and moisture-loving, is not too demanding for soil conditions, it can grow in rocky gardens, especially since the height of the plants allows them to be used in this form. Refers to frost-resistant crops, but hibernates under cover. Self-sowing easily, often abundantly. Highly decorative, suitable for landscaping personal backyards and summer cottages. It goes well with representatives of the genus and other flower cultures, for example, loosestrife, goldenrod, rudbeckia, cuffs and catchments (aquilegia).
The subtleties of growing
Despite the fact that the blue delphinium is not a whimsical plant, it should be grown taking into account some rules, only then the plants will delight with active growth and abundant flowering, which will decorate the garden with heavenly shades. In one place, the species can grow up to 7 years, after this time it needs to be transplanted, since it loses its decorative effect. The blue delphinium prefers a temperate climate; sharp temperature changes will not be to its liking. Does not like the plant and frost, they affect them destructively. The heat will also negatively affect the development of culture.
It is recommended to plant plants in semi-shaded areas with diffused light. The soil is desirable moderately moist, loose, nutritious. Compacted, waterlogged, swampy, saline and heavy clay soils are not suitable for growing blue delphinium. Cultivation on acidic soils is possible subject to prior liming. Poor soils are unsuitable for culture, they need to be fertilized. In the spring, before planting seedlings, organic fertilizers (compost or humus) and mineral fertilizers (complex) are applied to the soil, the amount depends on the degree of soil poverty. In the future, feeding should be carried out regularly - at least 2 times per season, otherwise the plants will lag behind in growth and bloom poorly.
The first feeding is carried out in early spring with the melting of snow (organic matter and complex fertilizers), the second - in the phase of bud formation (with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers). The third top dressing is welcome, it is carried out at the end of flowering (phosphorus and potassium are added, nitrogen fertilizers are not required). In addition to feeding, plants need moderate and regular watering, weeding and loosening. Loosening is carried out after each watering. To facilitate gardening work for the blue delphinium, the application of mulch is recommended. It will protect the root system from overheating and rapid loss of moisture. For the winter, the plants should be covered with a thick layer of dry fallen leaves; in snowy and warm winters, this operation is not required.
