Long-leaved action (Latin Deutzia longifolia) - ornamental shrub; species of the genus Deutzia family Hortensiae. The homeland is considered to be the western regions of China. In Russia and abroad, the cultural forms of the species in question are practically not used in landscaping.

Characteristics of culture

Long-leaved action is a deciduous flowering shrub up to 1-2 m high with hanging bare branches covered with grayish-brown or brown peeling bark. The root system is shallow, forms abundant growth, often used for reproduction. Annual shoots are star-pubescent. Leaves are opposite, petiolate, large, elongated, dull, green, whole, simple, narrow-lanceolate or lanceolate, finely toothed along the edge, pointed at the apex, with a wedge-shaped or rounded base, up to 12 cm long. On the underside, the foliage is greenish-gray, pubescent.

The flowers are small, up to 2.5 cm in diameter, in the buds they are purple in color, when blooming - lilac-pink or purple-pink, collected in multi-flowered corymbose inflorescences. The petals are oblong elliptical in shape. The bloom is abundant and colorful, begins in June, and lasts about three weeks. Fruits are small capsules, the diameter of which does not exceed 7 mm. Fruits ripen in September - October. They do not bear fruit in Russia. Winter hardiness of long-leaved action is low, without shelter in cold winters, it is damaged by frost. Drought resistance and resistance to pests and diseases are high.

Long-leaved action has several cultural forms:

* f. elegans - the form is represented by low shrubs with small flowers of pink-purple color;

* f. Veitchi i - the form is characterized by medium-sized dark purple-flowered shrubs;

* f. Farreri - the form is represented by shrubs with snow-white flowers.

Features of seed reproduction

The seeds of the long-leaved action are very small, so it is advisable to sow in seedling boxes. Seeds are sown in autumn or spring in pots or artificially heated greenhouses. The seeds are stored for one year in a dry and cool place. The substrate is made up of fertile soil, humus, peat and river sand, taken in equal proportions. Seeds are sown to a depth of 0.5 cm, sprinkled on top with a thin layer of well-washed river sand. This approach will prevent the formation of soil crust, which will speed up the germination process.

Regular watering is essential for successful seed germination. Containers with crops are covered with glass or foil before germination. At least once a day, the crops are aired. As a rule, gatherings appear after 30-45 days. With the appearance of 2-3 true leaves on the shoots, they dive into separate pots or a greenhouse. Young plants are planted in a permanent place after 2-3 years. While the seedlings are growing, they need careful care.

Features of reproduction by dividing the bush and root shoots

In this way, highly overgrown shrubs can be propagated. They are dug up and divided into 2-3 parts, each of which must contain well-developed roots, otherwise the delenki will not take root. Simultaneously with planting, thickening and old branches are cut out from the delenki. Planting is carried out immediately after division, otherwise the planting material will dry out and be unsuitable. Most of the representatives of the genus, including long-leaved action, form abundant root shoots in the process of growth. In the spring, it is dug up and transplanted immediately to a permanent place.

Care

Caring for long-leaved action is no different from caring for other members of the genus. The culture requires annual pruning (twice a year), watering (1-3 times a month, depending on weather conditions), top dressing (in spring and after pruning) and protection for the winter (the plants are wrapped in lutrasil or covered with spruce branches, and the foot is mulched). Long-leaved action is ideal for hedges, but it does not need a haircut. Subject to all conditions of growing and care, the plants will be rewarded with abundant flowering and active growth.
